The Mother Jones secret Mitt Romney video from a $50,000 a plate fundraiser back in May has done a lot of damage to the already-ailing Romney campaign, and James Carter IV , grandson of the former President, is proud of his role in leaking the shocking tape.
As we reported yesterday, the younger Carter admits fully to helping the footage get from an anonymous Twitter user to Mother Jones ‘ David Corn — and he is completely open about his motivation in the leak.
Jimmy Carter’s presidency is a frequent punching bag for the Romney campaign, with VP candidate Paul Ryan even saying the troubles of today make Carter’s term look like “the good ol’ days.” James Carter IV was tired of the constant badmouthing of his granddad, and, when the opportunity came to expose Romney for his true ideals and interests, he couldn’t help but step up, he says.
Carter sat down yesterday with Anderson Cooper to discuss the Mother Jones Romney tape, his motivations in leaking, and its affect on the campaign, and he explained:
“A lot of my Twitter followers have been saying that it’s poetic justice that a Carter was the one who helped to get out this video that’s given the Romney campaign so much trouble … And I agree with that.”
In an NBC video, Carter admitted a lot of the reason he helped leak the clip to Mother Jones was personal; he says:
“It gets under my skin — mostly the weakness on the foreign policy stuff … I just think it’s ridiculous. I don’t like criticism of my family.”
Carter says he emailed the news to Jimmy Carter, who responded that the response to the Mother Jones secret Mitt Romney video was “extraordinary.”
