5 Indianapolis Colts On The Roster Bubble In 2016 NFL Training Camp
The Indianapolis Colts are heading into the 2016 NFL season looking to prove a point that last season was a fluke. They were expected to compete for a Super Bowl appearance and ended up missing the playoffs altogether. A big part of their struggle was due to key injuries, especially the injury bug that bit franchise quarterback Andrew Luck.
Even with the injuries that Luck dealt with, Jim Irsay was still confident enough in his starting quarterback to lock him up to a huge long-term contract. Luck was given a five-year, nearly $123 million deal, as ESPN originally reported.
Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano were both kept by Irsay as well, which was a bit of a surprise. Pagano was expected to be let go in order for the Colts to begin their search for a big name to replace him.
All of that being said, training camp and preseason action will be interesting to keep an eye on. There are players who will be fighting for their jobs, and others looking to earn bigger roles.
Which five players are currently on the Indianapolis Colts’ roster bubble heading into 2016 NFL training camp?
Robert Turbin, Running Back
Obviously, the first name that comes to mind is Robert Turbin. He is dealing with off-the-field issues after being busted for marijuana possession, according to a report from NFL.com. That alone could end his tenure with the Colts, but there are also other running backs gunning for his spot that could knock him off the roster.
Erik Swoope, Tight End
There is no denying that Erik Swoope has shown signs of potential, but the improvement simply hasn’t been there. Pagano and the coaching staff hasn’t seen Swoope prove that he can play at the NFL level. Indianapolis has multiple tight ends vying for a roster spot and Swoope could find himself as the odd man out.
Josh McNary, Linebacker
Josh McNary has a great work ethic and talent to be a depth piece in the NFL, but the Colts have a lot of talent at the linebacker position. Indianapolis cannot keep all the linebackers that they currently have on their roster. McNary will be given every opportunity to win a roster spot, but it won’t be easy.
Brian Tyms, Wide Receiver
Another obvious choice for this list is wide receiver Brian Tyms. He simply isn’t good enough to beat out the top wide receivers on the roster as well as the young talent that the Colts brought in. Tyms should find a spot elsewhere, but there is a very good chance that he will not end up on the final roster.
Stephen Morris, Quarterback
At this point in time, there is no telling how many quarterbacks Pagano and the Colts will keep on their roster. It is reasonable to assume that one of the three current quarterbacks could be cut and signed to the practice squad. Assuming that is the case, Stephen Morris likely will not make the 53-man roster, but will likely stick with the Colts on their practice squad in case of emergency.
Expect to see the Colts bounce back in a big way during the 2016 NFL season. They have all the talent to make a serious run in the AFC, although these five players could end up missing out on the roster. There is a chance that they will fight their way onto the roster, but it will take hard work and some luck for that to happen.
