Nick Foles: Three Teams That Will Attempt To Sign Him

Quarterback Nick Foles was recently released by the Los Angeles Rams, according to a report from ESPN. Foles was traded to the Rams from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. The Rams received a 2015 fourth round pick, a 2016 second round pick, and Foles. The Eagles received Sam Bradford, a 2015 fifth round pick, and a 2016 conditional pick. The trade was highly criticized because Bradford’s injury history and inconsistent play wasn’t worth his high salary cap hit. The Rams gained a viable starter that was capable of leading the team. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, Foles didn’t turn out to be the starter they hoped for, which likely led to his termination. There is still a market for Foles now that he is a free agent. Here are three teams that will attempt to sign him.

Dallas Cowboys

While the Cowboys may be at the bottom of Nick Foles’ short list, they will definitely be making a call to his agent. The Cowboys’ success depends on the health of Tony Romo, which is always in doubt. Romo injured his back on more than one occasion. The most recent injury he sustained was a fractured collar bone last season. Without Romo on the field last season, the Cowboys went 1-11.

Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett need an insurance policy. If Tony Romo happens to get injured again, which is more likely than not, the Cowboys need another quarterback to come in with the capability to start. Nick Foles would be what is called a “stop-gap” quarterback and keep the Cowboys afloat. After all, he does have Dez Byrant to work with. If the Cowboys elect to pass on Foles, they will have rookie Dak Prescott potentially manning the helm. Foles has a much better chance of bringing the Cowboys to success than Prescott does.

Cleveland Browns

At this point in the Browns’ recent history, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they added any potential quarterback on the market. Now that Ryan Fitzpatrick has signed with the New York Jets, it’s safe to say that Foles is the best option currently on the market. If Foles is signed by the Browns, he would instantly be the favorite to beat out Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown.

Foles could actually be the answer that the Browns are looking for. The Browns decided to settle for Griffin and trade their second overall pick in order to build other roster positions. The Browns now have a chance to have a starter who is capable of bringing stability to the team. Shockingly enough, Nick Foles may actually opt to come to Cleveland. He asked for a release from the Rams because he knew there was no chance of seeing any playing time. If there’s one place Foles can start in 2016 it’s definitely Cleveland, where nothing is certain.

San Francisco 49ers

Nick Foles had the best years of his short career under Chip Kelly. Kelly is known for shaking things up and he may not want to work with Colin Kaepernick. He is already familiar with Foles and the kind of abilities can bring to the table. Foles seemed to thrive in Kelly’s system and that may attribute to the reason why he hasn’t had much success with the Rams. There are numerous quarterbacks in the NFL that have been products of a specific offensive system. Under Kelly, Foles passed for 27 touchdowns and threw two interceptions. He had a quarterback rating of 119.2 that same season.

Kelly may look to recapture Foles’ golden years with the Eagles. There is also a possibility that Kelly may try to move Kaepernick to another quarterback-needy team if he acquires Foles. Kaepernick was being pursued by the Denver Broncos in the early offseason. A trade could potentially work out with the Broncos or another team. Kelly is known to make bold gambles in the past. It would not surprise anyone if Nick Foles ended up becoming the 49ers starting quarterback.
