‘Destiny’ Update Fixes Solar Abilities And More, Final Patch For PS3 And Xbox 360

Bungie released a surprise patch to Destiny for current and last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles Tuesday. The 2.3.1 update delivers some fixes for Solar-based classes and other items. However, it is possibly more notable for being the final patch delivered to the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Destiny 2.3.1 update is now available for all consoles and will require players to download and install before logging in. A “Weasel” error will be displayed until players have installed the latest update, per Bungie’s support website.

There are a handful of fixes included in the update with the class fixes being the most welcome. The Solar sub-classes damage over time effects will now do the proper amount of damage while the Intellect stat will generate the correct amount of Super energy now. Even better, the Electrostatic Mind perk for Stormcallers has finally been fixed so it can greatly increase Super recharge time when allies are nearby.

Not listed are fixes for issues with certain reward ships and packages that players have experienced. A fix for the bug that causes Destiny to crash sometimes when the Firefly perk procs in a busy encounter is also missing.

Bungie also had the following bit of news for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners: “This update will also be the last scheduled deployment for Legacy Consoles, excluding emergency fixes for future game-breaking issues.”

As previously covered, Destiny: Rise of Iron will only release for the PS4 and Xbox One. The decision was made because the older consoles could not support the new content.

Technical limitations with previous gen consoles meant adding new content to Destiny which also meant cutting older content once Rise of Iron released. While older story missions and Strikes are not always played, cutting that content would have been a major blow to new players and an easy target for complaints. Players saw similar limitations force Bungie to make compromises to the game, such as the long time it took for Vault space to be expanded.

Rockstar Games made a similar decision with Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online. The developer could no longer add new downloadable content to the profitable multiplayer and had to end support.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is scheduled for a September 20 release and will cost $30. It does require The Taken King release from September 20. Those who pre-order the expansion will receive a black and gold Iron Gjallarhorn after completing an in-game quest. Those who don’t pre-order can still complete the quest to receive the Exotic Rocket Launcher, which involves forging an all-new weapon.

The theme of Destiny: Rise of Iron is exploring and dealing with the remnants of the Golden Age. The Iron Lords sacrificed themselves to stop the spread of a plague called SIVA. This technological plague has returned.

It will also explore the history of the Iron Lords, who they were, and why they have weapons named after them. This includes a journey to Felwinter’s Peak, which holds the Iron Temple, a mausoleum for the Iron Lords, and the new social space for Destiny. The expansion will begin with players ascending the peak to take back the mountain and the temple.
