Outlander will introduce a new character when it returns to television next spring. According to Scotland Now , fans will meet the adult version of Lord John Grey in Outlander Season 3. What can fans expect from the character in Voyager ?
In Diana Gabaldon’s books, John Grey became an important figure in Jamie’s ( Sam Heughan ) life. In fact, Gabaldon even wrote a few spin-off books about the character.
A few of these spin-offs take place at the same time as the events in Season 3. However, during a recent interview with TV Line , executive producer Ronald D. Moore revealed that he isn’t using any of the spin-off material in the upcoming season.
“Not so much. John Grey is in the third book, so we’re kind of taking our cues from what is actually in the third book at this point,” Moore explained in the interview. “We’re not averse to it. We just aren’t really bringing in the other novels at this point.”
Fans already met a young John Grey (Oscar Kennedy) last season. In the ninth episode, John attempted to harm Jamie. Thankfully, his efforts to kill Jamie were prevented.
As book readers know, Jamie and John develop a friendship later in life. According to Movie News Guide , a friendship is sparked during Jamie’s stint in Ardsmuir Prison.
Although none of the spin-off storylines will be included in Season 3, Moore assured fans that John Grey will make an appearance at some point.
Meanwhile, according to Vine Report , the third season will pick up some 20 years after the events in Season 2. During this time, Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) live separate lives hundreds of years apart.
For his part, Jamie eventually finds himself in Ardsmuir Prison, where John Grey is the head of the facility. In the books, Grey is secretly a homosexual who takes a liking to Jamie. However, Jamie makes it obvious that he doesn’t feel the same way towards Grey, and their relationship remains in the friend zone.
At this time, it isn’t known who will play the popular character in Season 3, though production for the new season is expected to begin in the coming months.
While Jamie and Grey start an unlikely friendship, Jamie will get back together with Claire at some point in the coming season.
During an interview with Variety , Heughan discussed his character’s reunion with the one he loves.
“Who is Jamie without Claire, why is he still surviving, what has he got to live for when he’s lost the woman that he loves?” Heughan told the outlet.
Although they spent years apart, fans can expect the romance to heat up as the characters venture beyond Scotland to exotic parts of the world.
An official premiere date for Season 3 of Outlander has not been announced. Fans can, however, expect the new season to hit televisions in the early part of 2017.
In other Outlander news, Christian Times is reporting that the series was once again snubbed by the 2016 Emmy nominations.
The hit series, which continues to draw high ratings for Starz, only received two nominations in the technical categories of costumes and production design. Fans were quick to express their disappointment with the Emmy snub, and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin couldn’t agree more.
Martin recently told fans that Outlander should have received more Emmy nominations and that “ Outlander was robbed.”
“All three leads were amazing… especially Tobias Menzies in his double role as Frank and Black Jack,” Martin concluded.
For its part, Game of Thrones managed to take home more nominations than any other show on television.
Season 3 of Outlander will premiere in early 2017.
