‘Arrow’ Star Katie Cassidy’s Black Canary Coming Back For Season 5, Make Appearances On ‘The Flash’ And ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’
In the world of comic books, death is never what it seems. Take for instance the shocking death of Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) during Season 4 of Arrow.
Even though not all fans were on board with her character, Laurel earned her way into being a vital part of Team Arrow before she eventually met her fate at the hands of Damien Darhk (Neil McDonough).
Now, despite her death, it seems fans haven’t seen the last of the Black Canary.
According to Cinema Blend, during the overwhelmingly popular Comic-Con in San Diego, the Arrow panel revealed a number of new treats for the upcoming season.
But out of all those tidbits, perhaps the most interesting was the announcement made by creator Marc Guggenheim. The Arrow mastermind said that Katie Cassidy will be back for Season 5.
But Arrow isn’t the only CW show Cassidy will be seen in. Comic Book Resources reports that Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle confirmed that Cassidy will also be showing up on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.“With Laurel being gone, it’s incredibly important for the team to move forward, remembering that legacy and honoring it,” Mericle said. “We will definitely see [Katie] Cassidy in the season premiere.”
Variety points out that Cassidy’s new deal with the network allows her to appear across the CW’s DC comic-based TV shows. The deal follows in the footsteps of Arrow villain John Barrowman and Legends of Tomorrow’s Wentworth Miller. Miller’s character also met his fate, much like the Black Canary, in season one.
“Katie Cassidy will not be disappearing from this universe,” Mericle added. However, Comic Book states that while the news of Cassidy’s return is certain, how and when she makes her return remains unknown.
She did die, after all, so will she be resurrected, or perhaps show up in hallucinations or flashbacks? Maybe even an alternate timeline?
So the story of the Black Canary remains unfinished. She started out as Laurel Lance in the first couple seasons before becoming the Black Canary in season three to honor her fallen sister, Sara, who previously suited up as the Canary before being murdered by Malcolm Merlyn.
Meanwhile, the reasoning for the producers to kill off the Black Canary isn’t too hard to figure out. Any romance between the show’s main character, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), had long ended, with tech genius Felicity Smoak becoming more and more romantically engaged with Oliver as each season wore on.
Aside from Felicity, Oliver also has a loving, sisterly relationship with his younger sibling Thea (Willa Holland). With these two women in Oliver’s life, it made it feel as if Laurel’s role in Team Arrow lacked a defined purpose.
However, that doesn’t mean Laurel was ready to call it quits. In Season 4 fans finally started warming up to her just as she had just begun to hit her stride as a character and a hero. With her recent role as Black Siren, she showed how much of an asset she really is to Team Arrow, even when she isn’t the Earth-1 Laurel.
In other Arrow news, a trailer for the upcoming season of Arrow gave fans a look at the new Season 5 big bad, who Guggenheim said was named Prometheus. Guggenheim went on to reveal that Prometheus is a brand new villain and differs from the one created by Grant Morrison for DC Comics.
Guggenheim also added that the character “fits in the theme of legacy this year that’s going to be driving all of our characters.”
Season 5 of Arrow will return to The CW on Wednesday, October 5.
