Nat Kaine: Five Facts About Tim Kaine’s Eldest Child, An Active Duty Marine
Nat Kaine is the eldest child of Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine. Now that Hillary Clinton has officially named the Virginia senator as her vice presidential pick, the nation is interested in learning more about his entire family.
Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, have two sons, Nat and Woody, and a daughter, Annella. All three attended Richmond public schools, according to Heavy. Nat and his siblings love spending their free time pursuing outdoor activities, like camping, hiking, canoeing, and biking around Virginia.
What are some facts about Nat Kaine?
1 – Nate is 25-years-old.
2 – The senator’s son graduated from George Washington University ROTC and was a Marine reservist who began active duty in January 2013, according to the Washington Examiner.
3 – Nat was the subject of a fierce debate between his father and Republican George Allen for the U.S. Senate seat back in 2012. When Kaine was campaigning, Allen tried claiming that his opponent would cut the defense budget. It was the perfect argument for Kaine because he noted that his son was in the military and that was evidence enough to assure voters that he wouldn’t slash the Pentagon’s budget.
“You and I are both fathers,” Kaine told Allen during their final debate. “I have a son who has started a career in the military. I will not do things that will hurt the troops or defense. I will not do things hurting veterans.”
Tim Kaine won the Senate seat in November 2012.
Bustle reports that Tim Kaine brought up his eldest son again when he spoke to Virginia veterans in 2014.
“My son is an infantry officer who takes control of his first platoon Monday so these are issues that matter to me personally,” Kaine told them.
4 – Like his two siblings, Nat Kaine was raised attending Catholic Church, and the whole family is active in Richmond’s St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
5 – Nat’s father is one of the few congressmen with a son who’s actively serving in the military.

The fact that Senator Kaine has a son in the military makes Hillary Clinton’s VP pick all the more intriguing to voters. It’s commonplace for Democrats to be against huge budgets for the nation’s defense. Clearly, the Virginia senator takes a different approach on this issue. Serving on both the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, ABC News reports that Clinton’s VP candidate “made a name for himself by sometimes butting heads with his friend, President Obama, when it comes to the role of Congress in giving the president authority to deploy military force and declare war.”
To give a little background on Nat Kaine’s parents, who were married on November 24, 1984. Kaine had graduated from Harvard a year before and was admitted to the Virginia bar. The couple made the eventual move to Richmond 30 years ago and still reside in the same neighborhood.
Will Tim Kaine talk about his family at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia? According to Ohio.com, Kaine will give a prime time speech on Wednesday, July 27. He’s expected to accept the vice presidential nomination and give American voters a glimpse into who he is. This is a chance for nominees to shine by articulating what they support, how they can make a difference, and reflect on family values.
It’s unknown if Nat Kaine will be at the convention with his brother and sister to support their father, but family members are typically seen in the crowd.
