Comic-Con Cosplay 2016: John Barrowman Geeks Out With Storm, ‘The Walking Dead,’ And Wonder Woman

Anything goes when it comes to Comic-Con cosplay, and this year’s cosplayers were definitely about that life at the annual convention for comics fans. The event kicked off with Preview Night on Wednesday, July 20, with four days of panels, exhibits, and everyone from Steampunk Trekkies to scantily-clad superheroes.

Cosplaying is a thrilling part of the tradition during the comics and pop-culture convention, and Arrow star John Barrowman seems to have won the Internet over with his three costume changes while hosting the 2016 Eisner Awards during SDCC. Metro.co.uk reports that Barrowman is at the event promoting the launch of the new Torchwood comic, which he has co-written with his sister, Carole Barrowman. The first issue is available now.

First-up, check out the video below of John dancing in the guise of “sexy” Kylo Ren of Star Wars.

Next up, Barrowman is cosplaying as Batman villain Harley Quinn. Quinn first appeared in 1993 as an ally to the Joker, and will soon be seen on the big screen in the live action film Suicide Squad, starring Will Smith.

John as Marvel’s superhero Squirrel Girl. She first appeared in 1992, and has the ability to communicate with squirrels.

John cosplayed as a short-skirted Zapp Brannigan from Futurama while introducing Futurama and Simpsons creator Matt Groening.

Barrowman has previously geeked out at SDCC, joining the amazing efforts of the thousands of cosplayers that descend up the San Diego Convention Center each year. Below are some eye-catching costumes from the event this weekend.

These Walking Dead cosplayers nailed it!

AMC announced the show’s Season 7 premiere date Friday at Comic-Con. The Walking Dead returns at 9 p.m. ET on October 23, IndieWire.com reports. Check out the 3-minute Comic-Con trailer below.

Mulder and Scully are still searching for the truth at Comic-Con 2016. Fans of The X-Files may be waiting an indefinite amount of time for the show to return following the finale of the revival series earlier this year.

In the meantime, two young-adult books about Mulder and Scully’s teen years will be published January 3, 2017. According to the Wall Street Journal, both will be set in 1979 and released simultaneously by Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing. Agent of Chaos will focus on a 17-year-old Mulder, while Devil’s Advocate will follow a 15-year-old Scully. The covers of the novels premiered exclusively on the publication’s website.

One big highlight from SDCC was the unveiling of the first poster and trailer for Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins. It’s the first big-budget superhero movie to both star a woman and be helmed by a female director. Wonder Woman’s official costumes from the upcoming movie were displayed for the first time at San Diego Comic-Con 2016. Check it out via the clip below.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as Princess Diana of Themyscira, and follows her as she joins the fight for global peace during World War I. Gadot is joined by Chris Pine, who plays Steve Trevor, Diana’s lover during the conflict. Wonder Woman hits theaters next summer. Check out the trailer below.

This year marks the 47th year for Comic-Con cosplayers to gather in San Diego, making it the country’s longest continuously-run comics and arts convention. Follow hashtag #SDCC or @Comic_Con to see more fabulous costumes from this weekend.
