‘Stranger Things’ Season 2: Will Fans Get Another Dose Of 80’s Nostalgia?
Netflix appears to have struck gold again with their latest television offering, Stranger Things. Set in the 80s, the TV series tells the story of a boy who goes missing and the supernatural goings-on in the town he went missing from.
Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is the boy who goes missing in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. A place described as “Spielbergian Americana” by Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy in the initial press release issued by Netflix. Will’s mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and her other son, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), along with Will’s friends, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) are all desperate to locate Will.
For viewers who lived through the 80s, it is not only a trip down memory lane style- and memorabilia-wise, it is a nod to every movie you ever loved that originated in the era. From Stand By Me, to E.T. and The Goonies, every episode of Stranger Things reminds the viewer of what it was like in that era, and why some of those movies are still being enjoyed by new generations today. Even the show’s executive producer, Mike Duffy, felt there was a definite need to draw heavily on the iconic movies of the era, as he explained to IGN.“We’re following three generations. We’re following the teens, the kids and the adults. Each storyline has a different DNA and a different mood. The teens are in this more John Carpenter mode and the kids are this Spielberg adventure film and the adults have this Close Encounters vibe.”
Netflix only released Stranger Things on July 15, and fans have already devoured the eight short episodes. So, what is the likelihood it will get a second season? So far Netflix hasn’t confirmed or denied a second season of Stranger Things, however, there are a few indicators out there a second season can be expected.
Matt Duffy certainly has plans to expand the Stranger Things universe.
“We don’t answer all the questions by the end of the season – there are definitely some dangling threads,” he told IGN.
His plan is to leave just enough threads dangling that the desire by the audience to see a second season is there. However, it was also a fine line between laying the groundwork for a potential Season 2 of Stranger Things and giving the series a satisfactory ending as well.
“But if we do get to go back, it’s not a second season as much as a sequel,” Duffy finished with.
So that’s not a confirmation of Season 2, just wishful thinking by of one of the show’s executive producers. But, considering Netflix was the first network approached by the team behind Stranger Things and it was snapped up right away according to Shawn Levy in an interview he did with Variety, it would appear Netflix is very keen on the concept. And, considering Netflix likes to continue their series, one could expect Stranger Things will expand into, at least, a second season. However, perhaps one of the most hopeful confirmations that Stranger Things fans will get a second dose of the 80s is the fact one of the show’s actors, Matthew Modine, has said there will be more.
“Oh, there will be a Season 2,” Modine said in an interview with French-language movie news site Premiere.
While this is not an official confirmation, it is certainly something more fans can add to in relation to whether Stranger Things will return for Season 2.
