‘Bates Motel’ Spoilers: Rihanna Snags The Role Of Marion Crane, Freddie Highmore To Write More Episodes, And A&E To End The Series In 2017 [Spoilers]
Bates Motel re-confirmed what the fans have feared for several months now — Season 5 would be the last. There has been a mystery about who would snag the role of Marion Crane, and bring the iconic shower scene to life again after almost 60 years. The wait is over–showrunner Carlton Cuse announced that the Rihanna snagged the role of Marion Crane, the Hollywood Reporter stated.
“We are going to meet Marion Crane, but what we don’t want to do is create the impression that we’re redoing the movie because we’re not at all. She’s a very different person in the movie and her story plays out in a different way.”
That’s right — Rihanna has decided to check into Bates Motel to play the role of Marion Crane. They didn’t reveal how many episodes she will appear in, only that they are excited that she agreed to join the cast.

As most people remember, Marion Crane stole a suitcase full of money from her job, and when the weather got bad, she stopped at the Bates Motel. Dressed as his mother, Norma, Norman stabbed Marion to death in the shower. It is an iconic scene that most people, both young and old, know well. Cuse refused to speculate on whether they will re-create the shower scene on the show.
“Season five is about the ways in which our show does and more specifically does not intersect with the events of Psycho. We are going to see a version of Norman that is much closer now to the one in the movie, but the way in which he acts and the events in the story will not be the same as the movie. They will cross paths with some of the events in the movie and lead to an ultimate resolution. What that resolution is and how that plays out is something that will be not disconnected to the movie Psycho but will be very much our own story in the same way the entire series has been.”
Cuse explained that Bates Motel was having difficulty finding the perfect Marion Crane for Season 5. They had heard that Rihanna was a big fan of the show, so Kerry Ehrin called her and asked if she was interested in the role. The role will be Rihanna’s biggest scripted gig to date.
Bates Motel confirmed that this season would end the critically acclaimed show. In addition to the role of Norma Bates, Vera Farmiga will add executive producer to her workload for the final season. Max Thieriot will make his director debut in the middle of the season, and Nestor Carbonell will helm the series for the third time. Freddie Highmore will write his second episode, and will join the writing room to help them.

As of right now, the cast of Bates Motel isn’t sad about the show ending. As Max explained, right now it feels like they are on vacation. They know the end is coming, but it doesn’t “feel” real yet. Max noted that when they return in a few weeks and conclude filming, it will be real. They will feel sad about never working together.
Bates Motel is scheduled to begin filming sometime in the fall and return in early 2017, Variety reports. Bates Motel fans expect the show to come back in March of 2017, as it typically airs new episodes every year in March.
For many fans, saying goodbye to Norman Bates will bittersweet. Norman isn’t your typical serial killer. You don’t hate him, and you have this hope that he will snap out of it, and somehow get past his “mommy issues.”
