‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Drops Major Spoilers About Jamie And Claire’s Reunion In Season 3
Fans are gearing up for a major time shift when Outlander returns for Season 3.
One of the biggest storylines in the new season involves Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) time jump to 20 years after the events of Season 2. We’ve already seen what Claire looks like in the future, but what about Jamie?
According to Cinema Blend, Heughan recently discussed how Jamie will look 20 years down the road. For the most part, the Outlander star is looking forward to portraying a much older — and perhaps wiser — Jamie.
“It’s fine, we’re getting put out to pasture and we can just get fat,” he jokingly explained. “I’ve already started. Surely [Jamie’s] got a bit of a beer belly. I’m going to take it upon myself to age ungracefully. I think fat Jamie is what everyone wants to see.”
While Heughan was quick to joke about the aging process, EP Ronald D. Moore and his team aren’t sure how Jamie will look as an older man. In fact, the actor has not done any makeup tests for time gap.
An older Jamie will come with a fair share of changes, perhaps even a small beer gut.
Fans saw Claire as an older woman in the Season 2 finale, so we know what to expect with Jamie. Claire was the same size and hadn’t gained any weight, though her face was older.
The end of Season 2 saw Claire jumping back to the 1960s right before the Battle of Culloden. Claire later found out that Jamie survived the fight, and next season will center on her journey back to Jamie.
The new season is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book Voyager and will feature Jamie and Claire traveling to exotic parts of the world.
According to Refinery29, the biggest question remains: Will all sex scenes still work with the aging? After all, watching a young Jamie and Claire heat things up was one element that made Outlander work so well the past two years.
At this point, it’s too early to tell how Outlander will handle future sex scenes. Hopefully, the aging process won’t diminish the romantic element between the characters.
Meanwhile, Econo Times reports the jump in age is an exciting prospect for Heughan.
“I’m kind of more excited about now going on from here,” he explained. “It’s just such an interesting place we’re at now.”
For Balfe, she researched some of her favorite actresses to prepare for an older, more mature Claire.
“I think experience and time change your makeup… For me the interesting things are, what does a lifetime’s experience do you? How do you change,” Balfe shared. “I think for Claire there’s a certain resignation that creeps into her character that I don’t think was there before.”
Although Claire ages in the new season, Balfe believes she still has two of her most important traits: hope and resilience.
“I feel like I’ve always felt Claire is a very hopeful person, and so resilient, but she’s resilient because of that hope and because, yes, bad things will happen, but she knows they can get through it and go forward,” she stated.
According to Ecumenical News, the Outlander team is already in the process of ironing out the details of Season 3. In fact, Moore revealed that the writer’s room has already started, and the first couple of episodes have scripts.
If things continue on schedule, Moore expects filming to start by the end of August or early September at the latest. Fans can expect the new season of Outlander to premiere on Starz in the spring of 2017.
