Major Lazer’s ‘Cold Water’ Ft. Justin Bieber & MØ Rockets To No. 1 On iTunes — Lyric Video

Justin Bieber’s “Cold Water” collaboration with MØ and Major Lazer is now officially here. And it’s a corker. Within 45 minutes of its premiere, the song soared to No. 1 on U.S. iTunes’ singles sales chart. The song is now No. 1 on iTunes in 60 countries.

The single is the first cut from Major Lazer’s fourth album Music Is The Weapon, which is reportedly dropping early in 2017.

“Cold Water” was released at midnight on Friday (July 22) on iTunes, Apple Music, and Spotify. An accompanying lyric video also rolled out. It follows social media teasers from May, a one week countdown, and a low quality radio rip leaking onto the internet on Monday.

On July 20, some Beliebers got a preview of the song’s lyrics when direct-messages were sent out from the Justin Bieber Twitter account to random fans who tweeted the account using #ColdWater2Days as a hashtag.

On Thursday night, Justin counted off the last five hours to the premiere with hourly posts on his social media.

So, is Major Lazer’s new single a hit — a possible song of the summer? The answer to both is yes.

The mid-tempo marries electronic pop, reggaeton beats, and gentle African guitar. Together, these elements pulse towards the muscular chorus with full-on brass sounds and combined vocal talents of Bieber and . For anyone wondering whether “Cold Water” would sound like Diplo’s “Where Are Ü Now” and “Lean On” hits, will probably say it comes closest to “Lean On.” But, in truth, this new collaboration makes its own mark.

“Everybody gets high sometimes, you know,” JB muses in the first verse. “What else can we do when we’re feeling low? / So take a deep breath and let it go / You shouldn’t be drowning on your own.”

The title is revealed in the pre-chorus, and finds Bieber voicing hopeful sentiments. “And if you feel you’re sinking, I will jump right over / Into cold, cold water for you / And although time may take us to different places / I will still be patient with you / And I want you to know…”

“I won’t let go / I’ll be your lifeline tonight,” the Grammy winner promises on the hook, with MØ providing bell-like height. “I won’t let go / I’ll be your lifeline tonight.”

MØ handles the track’s plaintive bridge on her own before she and Bieber trade lines on the final mighty chorus.

“Cold Water” was written by Diplo, Ed Sheeran, and Benny Blanco and produced by Major Lazer and Benny Blanco.

Revealing how the song came about, Diplo says, “I had been trying to link with Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran for years to find the right song we could all work on together.” He adds, “And the moment I heard this one, I knew it was the one.”

The producer-DJ continued, “The timing was perfect and when we approached Justin, he also was in love with the song we all had written.” Diplo explained that he “thought it would be interesting to incorporate another vocal and seeing she’s family, I reached out to MØ and we decided to try our best to make something fresh and interesting as Major Lazer.”

To Rolling Stone, Diplo elaborated, “It was spontaneous, no one thought it would work.”

At press time, “Cold Water” is now No. 1 on iTunes in the U.S. Canada, and five countries in South America after the song hit those markets. More countries are expected to join that tally as the timed worldwide release spreads.
