‘Mr. Robot’ Spoilers: Intriguing Season 2 Marred By Low-Key Opener?
Mr. Robot, the USA Network hacktivist TV show, is back after six months of waiting following an epic end to the series’ premiere season. The Golden Globe Award-winning show returned to USA Network on July 13 in a 91-minute double-episode premiere, which contrary to expectations, was met with a low-key viewership and ratings.
Mr. Robot was one of the best TV shows of 2015, and probably the best ever hacktivist drama series ever.
Mr. Robot fans and ‘fsociety followers’ would have expected the Season 2 double-episode premiere to make a similar triumphant entry to the premiere episode of last year. However, it wasn’t to be, as viewership dropped 40 percent from 1.75 million to 1.04 million while ratings were down 20 percent from 0.5 to 0.4, according to Deadline.

However, this does not put Mr. Robot’s second season on TV screens in the category of “one season wonder shows.” In fact, Mr. Robot is about to get bigger and better in the second season of the show, especially given the prevailing real-life circumstances and last season’s cliffhanger.
Spoiler alert: If you are ready to be spoiled, continue reading.
In Season 1, Mr. Robot concluded after fsociety triggered what appeared to be worldwide protests against “capitalism.” The hacktivist organization was intent on creating a world whereby everyone is free of debt. And right at the very end, it appeared to have created a pathway to what would become a classless society.

However, during the series break seaso, and on the countdown to season two, a sequence of trailers seemed to suggest that the path to the kind of society that fsociety was pushing for may be a treacherous one. And in the double-episode premiere of Mr. Robot Season 2, this fact was all but confirmed with the FBI hot on the heels of the people behind the hack, which led to the fall of Evil Corp.
Meanwhile, Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) is in a personal battle to getting rid of his dead father Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) as he aims to gain full control of his own actions. At the moment, Elliot appears pretty much disinterested in the operations of fsociety, let alone assuming the leadership of the group, which is now led by his sister, Darlene (Carly Chaikin).

In addition, Elliot also appears hell-bent on a mission to find Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom), who has gone missing since the execution of the hack, which took down his former employers. This puts into doubt whether or not Elliot will be able to find time to play a crucial role in fsociety’s missions.
However, according to the setting of Mr. Robot, Elliot is central to fsociety’s operations and fsociety is at the center of the show. Therefore, given the theme of Season 2, “Control is an Illusion,” it looks as if the lead character will soon have to realize that Elliot Alderson is the destruction, in which case, he will switch focus back to his illusionary dead father’s advice of leading fsociety to the next level.

When season one was ending, it was clear that the protests that set the movement in motion were just the beginning. The world was experiencing a potential economic meltdown. Interestingly, this is not far from the truth based real numbers. For instance, Brexit serves as a good example to what is happening globally while the European Union continues to struggle.
On the other hand, 2016 is an election year in the U.S., and given the progress of the GOP elections, it is now a clear two-horse race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. When you look at fsociety’s goals, it would be ideal to say that the organization is the direct opposite to Trump’s campaign manifesto.
So, isn’t this the perfect setting for Mr. Robot Season 2? It’s got to be intriguing how it shapes out despite the low-key opener.
