Lauren Graham Says ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival Was ‘Everything I Wanted It To Be And More’
Lauren Graham has gone onto achieve more success since the Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, but the actress and producer reveals in a new interview that the first series and the more recent revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, may have been her most fulfilling experiences. Graham opens up about returning to Star Hollow and reuniting with Alexis Bledel, who played her daughter on both Gilmore Girls shows, as she looks back on 10 years of the runaway hit.
Gilmore Girls Actress Lauren Graham Reflects On Becoming Lorelai Gilmore Once More
For Lauren Graham, coming back to her Lorelai Gilmore character in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, 10 years after having closed the chapter on that role, was something that filled her with both nostalgia and feelings of having fulfilled a dream, according to Entertainment Weekly. Graham says that returning to Gilmore Girls has allowed her to create something as near perfect as she is ever likely to get, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Lauren feels as though she’ll never be able to top what she’s done with her Gilmore Girls character.
“I relished it, and I’m ruined for life because there’s no more perfect fit I feel like for me than that writing and that show,” said the Gilmore Girls actress. “I’m so glad I got to do it again. I just can’t even explain it. It was everything I wanted it to be and more.”
Graham says there’s more to creating those feelings than what was done on the set of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, pointing to the huge amount of support and love fans have passed on to the series stars, throughout the production of the revival series. She says the excitement was kinetic, reaching onto the set of the Gilmore Girls revival and charging everyone’s performances, throughout shooting. Lauren compares it to going back to college and getting to experience it again, but with the knowledge of what to expect.
Lauren Graham On Reuniting With Her Gilmore Girls Family
The biggest moment for Graham in returning to Gilmore Girls came when she reunited with Alexis Bledel, who plays her daughter in the original series and in the revival series, reports People. Bledel is now a real life mother and, even though it might be suspected that time has changed the dynamic of their off-screen relationship, Graham says she and Alexis are as close as ever and that they have always had that bond of friendship shared by their on-screen Gilmore Girls counterparts.
“I have so much respect for her as an actor and a person and a mom,” says Graham of reuniting with Bledel. “And similar to the old show, we didn’t see a lot of baby around because we had long scenes to do. So I was just proud of how she kind of has handled her personal life. She’s very private. We were both kind of in different places then, and we’re both more settled down now. So that was kind of cool, to reconnect.”
Another big piece of the revival fell into place when it was learned that Melissa McCarthy would be able to rejoin the Gilmore Girls cast for the revival, in spite of her Ghostbusters obligations. Even though news that McCarthy would be able to take part came at the last moment, Graham says she was excited to have her back and feels she wouldn’t have felt quite as fulfilled, had Melissa not been able to join Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
“And the scenes she did are so fantastic,” Ms. Graham says of Melissa McCarthy’s return to the revival series. “The fact that that came through was the icing on the cake!”
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will premiere on Netflix later this year.
