‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 13 Spoilers — How Will Owen React When He Finds Out About Meredith And Riggs?

One of the biggest surprises in Season 12 of Grey’s Anatomy was Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) hookup with Riggs (Martin Henderson).

Although it’s good to see Meredith with a romantic interest, her relationship with Riggs could lead to lasting repercussions. How will Owen (Kevin McKidd) react to Meredith’s new relationship in Season 13?

Owen and Riggs have a complicated history together. In fact, the two characters were at odds for the majority of Season 12, though Owen has started to move past the feud.

According to Cartermatt, the revelation about Meredith’s new lover might change Owen’s attitude towards Riggs once again.

After all, Owen is very protective of Meredith and was close friends with her dearly departed husband, Derek. All things considered, Owen isn’t going to react well to the news, which, according to McKidd, fans can expect to watch unfold in Season 13.

“That’s going to come out, I’m sure, next season. I don’t think Owen is going to be happy about that,” McKidd told Entertainment Weekly.

McKidd views Owen’s relationship with Meredith as more of a brother/sister setup, and believes that Owen will try his best to protect Meredith at all costs.

“He’s almost becoming an unofficial brother to Meredith,” McKidd explained in the interview. “Derek was his friend. He’ll be a bit territorial, to be honest.”

McKidd added that his Grey’s Anatomy character’s complicated history with Riggs will also play a part in his reaction. Although Owen’s reasons are illogical, Riggs’ shady past will not make the situation any better.

“Also, the last time Riggs got close to somebody Owen cares about, she died,” he added. “He might be being a little irrational when he finds out.”

According to Ecumenical News, Riggs previously dated Owen’s sister, Megan. Megan mysteriously disappeared after a ride in a helicopter. She was flying in order to get away from Riggs, whom she had caught cheating on her.

While Riggs had no part in her death, Owen never really forgave him for the incident.

Owen started to move on with his life last season, though he is still struggling with Riggs’ constant presence at Grey Sloan Memorial. Once he finds out that Riggs and Meredith are together, his old feelings will likely resurface.

Meanwhile, Owen isn’t the only one who will have issues with Meredith’s new romance.

Meredith’s sister, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) started to fall for Riggs last season. She even told Meredith about her feelings and believes that Riggs likes her in return.

Maggie has no idea that Meredith and Riggs hooked up. Even worse, Meredith has yet to break the news to her, which is definitely not going to smooth things over once Maggie finds out the truth.

If Maggie discovers that Meredith was lying to her, their relationship will probably be damaged for quite some time.

The only question remaining is how Meredith will break the news to both Maggie and Owen. Although she might try to keep it a secret, it’s only a matter of time before they figure it out.

Of course, the truth probably won’t be revealed early in the new season, especially if Grey’s Anatomy wants to play up the drama. Either way, Maggie and Owen will find out about Meredith’s relationship with Riggs, and things aren’t likely to end well once they do.

At the same time, it isn’t clear how serious Meredith is about her romance with Riggs. Considering everything Meredith has gone through over the past two seasons, there’s no telling what Meredith is planning to do.

Fans can watch the drama unfold when Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy returns to television on September 22 on ABC.
