‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Creator Kurt Sutter Teases With ‘Mayans MC’ And Prequel News — Will Charlie Hunnam Return As Jax Teller?
Kurt Sutter shared some promising news for Sons of Anarchy fans. Sutter confirmed the new Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans MC, was close to debuting on FX. What about the rumored prequel?
“The return is near,” Sutter wrote on Twitter alongside a photo of Emilio Rivera.
According to the International Business Times, the spin-off will focus on the Mayans instead of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original (SAMCRO). The Mayans were SAMCRO’s biggest rival club before Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller negotiated a truce.
Sutter hired Elgin James to help develop a script, which will be a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.” Sutter hired James because of his background in Latino traditions and culture.
At this time, it is thought the new spin-off will start after the events that unfolded on Sons of Anarchy. This means Hunnam will not appear in the new show. However, there is a chance that he will reprise his role in the prequel.
Game N Guide reports that Sutter is preparing to launch a Sons of Anarchy prequel alongside the spin-off.
The prequel will center on the origins of SAMCRO and might eventually feature Hunnam’s early days with the MC. Although Hunnam’s return to SAMCRO is an exciting prospect for fans, there is a chance Hunnam will decline the offer.
According to MNR Daily, Hunnam’s relationship with Sutter wasn’t the healthiest.
“Kurt and I never blasted each other in the face,” Hunnam shared. “But, I will say it got close.”
Furthermore, Sutter and FX have yet to agree on the prequel. And even if Sutter manages to convince FX that the prequel is worth funding, he doesn’t envision it lasting longer than one season.
Instead, Sutter is planning on a 10- or 12-episode season. Of course, that could change depending on how many fans tune in.
That being said, there is no guarantee that the prequel will ever hit television. In fact, Sutter is currently working on a comic book series with Ollie Masters titled Redwood Originals. Will this replace the prequel?
The comics will center on Jax’s early days with the club, so it is possible that the prequel is still in the works.
“It’s Jax prospecting to become a full club member,” Masters explained. “This is a story about him proving himself — to the club, to their enemies and allies and to himself.”
According to Vine Report, the prequel is set in the 1960s and will include the storylines of the original founders. If this holds true, then the prequel will not conflict with the comics.
If Sutter is able to iron out the details with FX, then there is a chance Hunnam will make a cameo at some point. Hunnam’s part in the series depends on when it takes place and whether or not he is willing to reprise his role.
Whatever ends up happening with Hunnam, at least fans can rest assured knowing that the Sons of Anarchy spin-off is on the way. Considering how the biker drama was one of FX’s most successful shows to date, there is little doubt that Mayans MC will follow in its steps.
Hunnam has yet to comment on the new series and confirm his return as Jax Teller.
Apart from Jax, fans can expect a number of Sons of Anarchy characters to make an appearance on the spin-off and prequel. Unfortunately, Sutter has yet to reveal which characters will be returning.
FX has not released an official premiere date for Mayans MC.
