‘Star Trek’ Actor Zachary Quinto Talks Late Anton Yelchin [Video]

Zachary Quinto plays Spock on Star Trek, but he is not immune to the human feelings of loss in real life. That is why when he went on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he had no other agenda but to make sure that he got to speak about his good friend, Anton Yelchin, who passed away late last month after an accident involving his car.

The world was shocked to hear of Anton Yelchin’s death last week when news broke that the young Star Trek star had been killed in a freak accident where his car had slipped out of gear and rolled down a hill and hit him, pinning him until he was dead. Yelchin was only 27 at the time of his death and he was a highly admired movie star in Hollywood who was loved by his co-stars and his friends equally.

When Zachary Quinto went on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, it had something of an emotional feeling to him and he opened up about his friend who he had lost too soon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Beautiful, beautiful guy. I don’t even know how to talk about it,” Zachary Quinto told Colbert. “You know, we already knew this was going to be a bittersweet experience as a result of the loss of Leonard [Nimoy] last year, but this has been absolutely devastating for all of us.”

That was something that seemed to be emotional to Zachary Quinto and he acknowledged that not only will Anton Yelchin be missed by his cast mates on Star Trek, but also many people that have had the chance to work with him in the industry, including actors, directors, producers and crew. But as such a young talent, Yelchin would also be missed by scores of people that were fans of his work in movies.

“I think our goal has to be to just celebrate his incredible life and honor him as much as we can,” Zachary Quinto told Colbert. “It was a terrible loss not only to us personally, but I think to the industry and audiences. He was such a talent.”

For those who do not know, Anton Yelchin has been in a whole host of sci-fi and horror films in recent years. His recent film credits include Fright Night, Burying the Ex, Only Lovers Left Alive and Green Room, all of which were horror films. Yelchin had been carving out quite a niche for himself in the horror movie industry and his work on Star Trek also transcended him into the cousin genre of science fiction.

So when Zachary Quinto was speaking to Stephen Colbert about Anton Yelchin’s death, he gave the audience a rare view of how a celebrity can take such loss in Hollywood, which most would assume he was able to easily maintain his composure in front of the camera.

“I think we take it for granted in a lot of ways because we genuinely love each other so much,” Zachary Quinto said on The Late Show. “But we are truly intertwined inextricably and I think we always will be.”

For most people who act in films together, it is hard not to see each other as family after spending so much time together. But with Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin, they were part of a series of blockbuster science fiction films with Star Trek, so that makes it all the more difficult to lose someone that they have so much history with. It is a bit overbearing, to say the least. But as Zachary Quinto’s Spock said, they will all endure.

“We laugh like nobody’s business, but we’re very lucky to have each other — there’s no question about it,” Zachary Quinto said about the Star Trek cast. “I think we are genuinely connected on a really true and authentic level as a cast and as friends, even when we’re not filming the movies.”

Anton Yelchin can still be seen in one last role on Star Trek this summer on July 22.
