??Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg? Put ‘Tintin 2’ On Hold As They Work On ‘Secret’ Project

It has been five years since Steven Spielberg teamed with Peter Jackson to bring The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé to the big screen. The film was written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish, and starred Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Nick Frost, and Simon Pegg. The 3D motion capture animated adventure grossed over $373 million, performing better overseas than in North America. Its international success was enough for Jackson and Spielberg to move ahead with the next chapter, reportedly titled The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoner of the Sun.

However in the years since the first film, there has been little evidence of a sequel coming together. The good news is that Spielberg and Jackson still want to make the sequel, but it will happen after the completion of the super secret project that they’re currently working on together.

Speaking with the New Zealand Herald, via The Playlist, while promoting this weekend’s release of The BFG, Spielberg had this to say about his future collaborations with Peter Jackson.

“Peter was so busy with ‘The Hobbit’ that it took him away from ‘Tintin’ and he’s doing another film for my company now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that he’ll do ‘Tintin.'”

What could this secret project be? Geeks Of Doom reports that one possibility could be that long-developing Dam Busters movie Jackson has been wanting to produce. The film would be a remake of the 1955 film of the same name about a Royal Air Force squadron tasked with blowing up dams during World War II. Jackson is also said to be interested in the story, As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl. The book tells the true story of David Reimer, a Canadian man who was raised a female after a botched circumcision when he was just 7-months-old.

The writer, director, and producer is best known for his The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, both of which are adapted from the novels of the same name by J.R.R. Tolkien. Other notable Jackson films include the 2005 epic monster remake, King Kong, and he also produced District 9. As for Tintin 2, Jackson and Spielberg were going to switch the roles they had on the first animated feature. Peter produced that effort and Steven directed. The follow-up would have Jackson directing and Spielberg producing.

The Adventures of Tintin was the first non-Pixar animated film to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It was nominated for six Saturn Awards, including Best Animated Film, Best Director for Spielberg, and Best Music. Spielberg acquired the rights to produce the film following Hergé’s death in 1983. He initially planned for the project to be a trilogy.

Jackson confirmed the Tintin sequel in 2013.

“As soon as I’m free of ‘The Hobbit,’ I’ll be going back into doing ‘Tintin.’

“It was held up by ‘The Hobbit,’ but we have every intention of doing another ‘Tintin’ movie and it’s just waiting on me to be done with these ‘Hobbit’ movies.”

Last month, Spielberg announced that he’ll reunite with Indiana Jones creator George Lucas for the fifth installment of the iconic adventure series. The film, slated for a 2019 release, will see Harrison Ford returning as the titular archaeologist, NME.com reports.

Peter Jackson’s IMDB credits show that he and Spielberg will produce the third installment in the Tintin franchise for an unknown release date. Peter’s last film was 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which grossed over $250 million.
