‘The Late Show’ Recap: From Stephen Colbert’s Hilarious Summer Movie Taglines To Zachary Quinto Honoring Anton Yelchin

The Late Show had a new show aired on July 1 to kick off the Fourth of July holiday weekend with a hilarious start. Stephen Colbert had Orange Is the New Black star Natasha Lyonne, Star Trek Beyond Zachary Quinto, and 2 Chainz as his special guests on Friday night.

The episode had its share of laughs, with funny segments by Colbert, and amusing stories by Lyonne and 2 Chainz. There were some somber moments when Colbert talked with Quinto while talking about the losses of two major Star Trek actors, Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin, but the interview did have some light-hearted moments.

Colbert claimed that he enjoys watching summer blockbuster movies and he introduced the segment “First Drafts,” where Colbert talked about some of the movies’ early tagline drafts.

The first rewritten movie tagline started with the recently released Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 hit that starred Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. Colbert showed a small poster that rewrote the original Resurgence tag with “For 20 Years Will Smith Said ‘No.’ So We Just Made It Without Him.”

While some of the cast members from the original film returned for the sequel, there were stories that Smith declined to appear in Resurgence or that his salary was too expensive for the film’s budget. Smith’s character does get a brief mention in the sequel.

Smith gets another mention for another upcoming movie, Suicide Squad, that’s featured in “First Drafts.” Colbert changed the tagline from “Worst Heroes Ever” to “The Movie Will Smith Did Instead Of Independence Day.”

The other movies mentioned in The Late Show bit included Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, Ben-Hur, and Central Intelligence.

Natasha Lyonne, who plays Nicky on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, had an amusing story to tell Colbert during her interview slot. The actress talked about how during the show’s press junkets, she tried her best not to reveal any spoilers on the series’ fourth season, which premiered on June 17.

While the actress did a good job not revealing anything major to reporters, unfortunately, she let a little spoiler slip out when she encountered a TSA agent at an airport.

“A nice, lovely TSA agent said, ‘Ah, I’m such a big fan of the show. Are you coming back this year?’ And, without looking, without blinking, I said, ‘Yes, of course.’ It was such a weird moment.”

Zachary Quinto, whose movie Star Trek Beyond comes out on July 22 in the United States, talked to Colbert about the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, who died in a freak accident in his home on June 19.

“We already knew that this would be a really bitter-sweet experience because of the loss of Leonard [Nimoy] last year, but this has been absolutely devastating for all of us. I think our goal has to be to just celebrate his incredible life and honor him as much as we can.”

Colbert and Quinto also talked about science fiction topics, and Colbert mentioned that the Star Trek franchise has more to do with the science fiction genre than the Star Wars series, which is more of a fantasy.

“To me, Star Trek is real science fiction. Star Wars takes place in space ? but it seems like less science fiction to me. It seems more like…it’s space opera.”

Towards the end of the clip, Quinto, who plays Spock in the new Star Trek film trilogy, makes an admission that he wasn’t that crazy about the original Star Trek TV series due to its lackluster production.

Stephen Colbert also interviewed the “king of Atlanta hip-hop,” 2 Chainz. One of the questions Colbert asked the rapper was how he came up with his stage name, and 2 Chainz told the story about how he had to change his original rapper name.
