Patrick Dempsey Dukes It Out With Colin Firth In New ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ Trailer
Patrick Dempsey has to get past Colin Firth before he can win the heart of his lady paramour in the new trailer for Bridget Jones’s Baby. The movie marks a return to the big screen for the popular franchise starring Renee Zellweger after a hiatus that seemed to indicate the series was dead. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the movie features yet another love triangle, and it also shouldn’t surprise us much that Dempsey, who once played McDreamy on Grey’s Anatomy, will play a rather charming American desperately trying to beat out the competition in the always proper and always British Colin Firth.
It should also be pointed out that while there was an awful lot of noise made over how different Zellweger looks when compared to her earlier acting career, it’s rather clear she’s quite recognizable even if her look has changed at least a little bit over the years. Time gives us a breakdown of what we know about the story of Bridget Jones’s Baby so far, and it isn’t all that much. We do know that Hugh Grant is out, and in his place, it appears we’re going to meet Patrick Dempsey’s Jack Qwant.
The movie is indeed following along the life, times, and romance of our favorite publishing executive as she deals with now being in her 40s. This time around, Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) is her ex-boyfriend who just might be trying to win her back and win her over from Dempsey’s character. In the trailer, we see our heroine is enjoying the company of both Mark and Jack, and it appears neither man is particularly happy the other is around.

Even worse than the romantic entanglements that come about because of this trio, neither man seems to know for sure who is the father of the baby that’s about to be brought into the world. Both the men seem to want to be declared the father, and both men seem to want to settle down with Bridget. But so far, she hasn’t decided who she is going to end up with, and she’s not spilling the beans on just who the father is.
Entertainment Weekly nails down the timeline as taking place 12 years after Edge of Reason, and it’s this reason that Patrick Dempsey is able to be introduced without the audience immediately wondering where this American businessman came from. We also don’t have to figure out just why Firth and Zellweger’s characters broke up, as we can assume time just took its toll at some point. The reappearance of both Renee Zellweger and Patrick Dempsey is interesting enough, considering both actors have been away from the silver screen almost as long as Bridget Jones has been.

The last time we saw the one-time teen flick heartthrob he was starring as the human villain who was aiding the Decepticons in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It’s hard to believe that flick hit theaters five years ago now. Since then Dempsey has been spending his time on television in Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Like Dempsey, Zellweger hasn’t been spotted in movies, but unlike her co-star, she also hasn’t been seen on TV either. My Own Love Song was the last movie we saw her in before this year.
Patrick Dempsey is making both a triumphant return to movies, but it was recently revealed he was able to patch things up in the romantic department as well. Once estranged from one another, it was reported last week the pair had managed to rekindle their relationship. Patrick Dempsey, Renee Zellweger, and Colin Firth can be seen starring in Bridget Jones’s Baby on September 16, 2016.
