Suge Knight, Already In Jail, Sues Chris Brown After Nightclub Shooting
Rapper Marion “Suge” Knight may already be behind bars, but that’s not stopping him from trying to take down Chris Brown.
Knight has sued Chris Brown and singer Pia Mia, as well as other owners of popular West Hollywood nightclub 1OAK, in response to an attack two years ago that left Knight with seven gunshot wounds, including wounds to the abdomen, chest, and left forearm.
Knight is suing Brown, who he lists as a “known gang associate,” and the venue for a lack of security during a party that took place in the nightclub, as well as for letting in at least one armed person. Specific information on how much Knight is seeking has not been released, but he has at least asked for Brown and 1 Oak to pay medical expenses for the injuries he sustained at the party.
Knight currently awaits trial for running over two men with his car, killing Terry Carter. But that hasn’t stopped him from seeking justice against those he feels have wronged him.
Knight’s attorney, Jamal Tooson, notes in the lawsuit that Knight should have been notified when someone with a weapon entered the premises.
“All defendants willfully and maliciously failed to warn plaintiff of the dangerous condition within the subject premises as a result of inadequate security measures and screening for weapons of all entrants. As a foreseeable result, gunshots were fired by those admitted into the event and (Knight) was shot and seriously injured.”
This is not the first time Knight has been shot. He sued Kanye West for failing to provide enough security at a party after being shot in 2005. In that case, the judge did not rule in favor of Knight.
Knight’s own legal troubles run deep, including five years’ probation for assaulting two rappers in 1992 and for violating his probation by getting into a fight shortly before Tupac Shakur was shot and killed in 1996. Knight was also shot during that incident, but he was able to drive the pair to a nearby hospital, where Shakur was later pronounced dead. Additionally, Knight and comedian Katt Williams pled guilty to robbery charges for stealing a celebrity photographer’s camera.
After the 1 Oak shooting, Knight’s lawyers claim he was merely acting in self-defense and was fleeing a possible attacker, saying, “Mr. Knight was still extremely frail from his gunshot injuries less than five months earlier. When the facts are finally revealed in this case, we’re certain it will be apparent that our client was simply trying to flee for his life.”
He awaits trial for the early 2015 incident.
Brown has also seen his share of legal troubles, including the 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. Additionally, Brown and his bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, allegedly punched a man outside Washington D.C.’s W hotel and was later arrested on a felony assault charge (he was later released). He was also kicked out of court-ordered drug rehab and instead placed in the custody of the LA County Sheriffs in March of 2014.
In a trailer for Welcome to my Life: The Official Chris Brown Documentary, Brown expressed remorse for the Rihanna incident, saying he felt suicidal.
“I went from being on top of the world, No. 1 songs, being kind of like America’s sweetheart to being Public Enemy No. 1. I was thinking about suicide and everything else. I wasn’t sleeping, I barely ate. I just was getting high.”
No word yet on when, or if, Knight’s lawsuit will see the light of day in court.
