Hungary have not only exceeded expectations at Euro 2016 by qualifying for the knockout round, but the minnows have done so by topping their group which also contained Portugal and Austria. Their reward, of course, is a tie against one of the tournament favorites, Belgium, who have had a bumpy ride through to the qualification themselves, having been stopped dead in their tracks in the opening game against Italy.
Nonetheless, even at 100-1 outsiders to win the tournament, Hungary’s performance in the group stages has seen them draw a lot of praise, and captain Balazs Dzsudzsak, who scored two goals in the scintillating match against Portugal, said the whole team is ecstatic at their achievement at Euro 2016 so far, reports Sky Sports.
“At the moment everything seems like a dream, and we’re always asked after the matches what we feel.
I think our answers are too simple because we are still affected by what happened in Budapest and in Hungary – 15 million people went out of their minds.”
Speaking before the game, Hungary coach Bernd Storck emphasized the scale of the task facing his team, but said that his players have been calm during their preparation for the match against Belgium, according to UEFA.com.
“We are very happy to be in the round of 16, I think we deserve it. We have played good football and have kept improving. But now we play the team second in the FIFA rankings, an excellent side. We have to concentrate on our strengths, be strong in defense and clinical when we have chances.
“It’s not for me to say if [Belgium] are a golden generation but they play at top clubs and have won a lot of trophies. They had a very difficult start against Italy – you can easily lose to them and that was the case at this tournament. But Belgium have got better from game to game and it is going to be a big challenge for us.”
Hungary will have to be at their defensive best if they are to stop Belgium’s attacking players from running the show, and 21-year-old Adam Nagy will likely be tasked with controlling the imperious Kevin De Bruyne in the middle of the park.
But coach Storck has his injury concerns before the game, and forward Daniel Bode is expected to miss the game after having played only a limited role in training last week, while defender Attila Fiola has been ruled out.

Ranked the No.2 team in the world, Belgium’s current crop of players have been hailed as the “golden generation,” and many are expecting them to go all the way in the tournament. And yet, Belgium took time to find their feet at Euro 2016, coming up terribly short in their opening game against Italy.
That defeat provoked Belgium coach Marc Wilmots to reconsider his tactics, and his decision to bring back Kevin De Bruyne in the center of midfield has paid rich dividends since. However, speaking before the game, Wilmots was eager to overplay the significance of the opposition, and said that he would have preferred being drawn against England or Spain than play Hungary in the knockout round.
“We would have nothing to lose against those teams. The press acts like the game against Hungary will be a walkover.
“Did people not see them play against Portugal? There are no more small teams in international football.
“[Kevin De Bruyne] could be key. He didn’t play very well against Italy but has striven to improve – he has wanted the ball and taken the initiative. Kevin is smiling again, he is enjoying his football. There has been a lot going on in his life, he changed clubs, but now he is smiling again.”
Belgium will also be hoping that the majestic De Bruyne will be ably assisted by Chelsea talisman Eden Hazard and the team’s coterie of talented ball-playing players, while upfront Romelu Lukaku appears set to be tasked with being clinical with his chances.
Mousa Dembele and Yannick Carrasco are in contention for the game, and Belgium do not have any injury concerns to deal with before the game.
