Wonder Woman Origin Series Being Developed By The CW

A new Wonder Woman origin series is being developed by the CW, Vulture reports. The network has brought in Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Allan Heinberg to write and develop the series, tentatively titled Amazon. The series will detail Diana Prince’s life as a young Amazonian before she became Wonder Woman.

Heinberg has previous experience working with comic book series; he wrote Young Avengers, which was a huge sales success for Marvel, although it faced criticism for being too similar to rival DC’s Teen Titans series.

The CW is only developing the script at this point, and no pilot has been greenlit yet. If the network does manage to film a pilot and get the series ordered, it will be the first successful attempt — outside of animation — to reboot the series since the original Wonder Woman wrapped in 1979 after three years on ABC and CBS.

David E. Kelley pitched an attempt to revive the franchise to various networks in the fall of 2010, and it had been picked up by NBC in 2011. However, the network decided not to move forward with the series after Kelley turned in his pilot. Similarly, Joss Whedon had been attached to a film adaptation of Wonder Woman, but his attempt never saw the light of day. Whedon is now busy working on a sequel to The Avengers.

If a Wonder Woman origin series is indeed picked up by the CW, it will join the likes of Smallville, WB’s take on Superman’s early years, and the new series Arrow, which launches this season.
