NBA Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers Could Sign Dirk Nowitzki In NBA Free Agency
As the 2016 NBA offseason gets underway, there are a lot of trade rumors and rumors surrounding the upcoming free agency market. There are a lot of high profile names available and there is a lot of cash just waiting to be spent. One of those high profile players is Dirk Nowitzki, who decided to opt out of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
Many believe that Nowitzki will just re-sign with the Mavericks when free agency opens, but he could choose to listen to pitches from other teams. If that is indeed the case, there is one team that could come calling that might intrigue him enough to leave Dallas.
John Buhler of FanSided broke down five reasons why Nowitzki should end up signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason, and it certainly makes sense for both parties.
Cleveland was able to pull off a historical NBA Finals comeback to knock off the defending champion Golden State Warriors in seven games. LeBron James took his game to a new level and obviously still has a lot of basketball left in him. Adding a threat like Nowitzki would make the Cavaliers favorites to repeat as champions next season.
Last season with the Mavericks, Nowitzki ended up averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He shot 44.8 percent from the field overall and knocked down 36.8 percent of his three-point shots as well. Nowitzki proved that he still has a lot of high level basketball left in his career and Cleveland could use another talented big to improve their depth. At 38-years-old, winning another championship may be a motivation for Nowitzki in free agency this offseason.
There are no other teams that can offer Nowitzki a more comfortable role and a better chance to get another ring. They have the best player in the NBA and a great supporting cast. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love are borderline superstars as well and Nowitzki would add leadership and yet another legitimate star.
Nowitzki would push Love for a starting spot and could help the power forward improve in a big way. Love struggled throughout the NBA Finals and learning from one of the best stretch power forwards to ever play the game would be a step in the right direction.
David Griffin is one of the most aggressive general managers in the NBA and will continue to be just that in the years to come. Dan Gilbert has been an aggressive owner as well and has not had any problems paying a little extra in order to build a championship contender.
Adding a player like Nowitzki wouldn’t be cheap, but money doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Cavaliers in free agency.Mark Cuban is going to do everything in his power to bring Nowitzki back to Dallas. It doesn’t seem all that likely that the German giant will leave home, but stranger things have happened. More than likely, however, Nowitzki will end up re-signing with the Mavericks fairly soon after free agency opens.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding Nowitzki this offseason as free draws closer. There are going to be quite a few teams interested in signing the big man and the Cavaliers will be one of them. Golden State is also rumored to be interested, which could be intriguing to watch as well.
