Camila Cabello Finally Addresses Those Shawn Mendes Dating Rumors
After months of speculation that she and Shawn Mendes were officially dating, Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello is finally speaking out about the rampant romance reports.
Camila got candid about the Shawn dating rumors in an interview with Seventeen backstage at Canada’s Much Music Video Awards on June 19, where Cabello once again put the dating rumors to rest.
“Making music with your friends is the best and we’ve had so much fun working together,” Camila said of working with Shawn on the duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer” before admitting that constant reports claiming she and Mendes are a couple actually “don’t bother” her.
“When it comes to Shawn the speculation doesn’t really bother me because we’re just really great friends,” Camila told Seventeen, admitting that she actually got a lot of hate from fans on social media who believe the two were a couple.
“If I could give any advice to girls that get hate when they have close friendships with a guy,” Cabello continued, “is that at the end of the day, all that matters is that you surround yourself with people that make you happy.”
“If people around you hate on you for that, then they’re not really people you want in your life anyway,” Camila added to Seventeen.
Camila Cabello’s latest denial that she and Shawn are officially a couple comes just days after a number of fans took to social media to speculate that Mendes’ new single, titled “Treat You Better,” was actually about Shawn’s romance, or at least one time romance, with Cabello.
Shawn has yet to speak out regarding the fan speculation about his new single, but the speculation came shortly after Mendes also shut down the Camila romance rumor mill in a candid interview with Seventeen magazine.
Despite denying that they’re boyfriend and girlfriend, Shawn had nothing but praise for the Fifth Harmony star in his Seventeen cover shoot, where he admitted that he “loves” Camila and thinks she’s “phenomenal.”
“I love her and she’s so talented. She’s one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart… musically, she blows my mind,” Shawn told Seventeen of his and Cabello’s close relationship.
But just because Shawn is singing Cabello’s praises doesn’t mean that things are getting romantic between the two.
“We aren’t dating,” Mendes confirmed of his “I Know What You Did Last Summer” duet partner.
Shawn Mendes previously shot down the Camila dating rumors earlier this year in an interview with Britain’s CapitalFM radio show, where Mendes clarified once and for all that he and Cabello are not a couple.
“It’s fine, honestly, you can’t expect as an artist to do a collaboration with a girl and the world not think you’re dating,” Mendes said in the radio interview, “so it’s okay.”
Shawn then confirmed that he and Camila are “not dating” before telling the show’s host, “[S]o that’s straight there. Don’t ask again.”
Camila and Shawn have long denied the dating reports, despite E! News claiming back in September 2015 that Cabello and Mendes were officially a couple after they grew close when Shawn joined the Fifth Harmony girls and Austin Mahone on a joint tour last year.
A source close to Shawn and Camila told the site at the time that the two teenagers were officially an item and “really like each other and laugh nonstop when they’re together,” but the two never officially confirmed their supposed relationship.
