Shia LaBeouf Dishes On Ex Carey Mulligan: ‘It Didn’t Work Because She Wanted Marriage’

Shia LaBeouf is known for letting more than a few awkward things slip out of his mouth, whether it’s his accidental confession of hooking up with Megan Fox or his admission that he sent sex tapes of himself to Lars Von Trier to land his “real sex” role in The Nymphomaniac. Recently, LaBeouf continued his awkward “TMI” tradition when he explained why his relationship with actress Carey Mulligan didn’t pan out before their split in 2010.

“Our thing came down to not having compatible work/lifestyles,” LaBeouf told the London Sunday Times (via the Daily Mail). “We were always traveling and had sensibility differences that weren’t conducive to living with one another.”

He continued: “I’m harder on myself and my surroundings than she is, and we had a culture shock in terms of meeting her parents and vice versa,” explains LaBeouf, currently promoting his Prohibition-era film Lawless. “Sensibilities, cultures, histories. There were differences, that’s all.”

Mulligan bounced back fairly quickly after her split from LaBeouf, shacking up with childhood pal Marcus Mumford, ultimately marrying him in April.

“She’s happy as hell right now, and we wouldn’t have been able to make it like that,” admits LaBeouf. “She was chasing marriage, family, kids more than I was.” Still, Labeouf gushes about his former flame, “Carey is not just an actress, she is a great human being, a sweet girl and super-intelligent.”

So, are wedding bells in the future for LaBeouf? The actor hasn’t ruled it out.

“I’m not opposed to marriage,” says LaBeouf, who is currently dating designer Karolyn Pho. “I just think I’m quite young. I come from divorce. I’m only doing marriage once. It’s not a game for me. I’m not a religious person, but I have ethics.”

In any case, LaBeouf should probably wait until his unsimulated-sex performance for The Nymphomaniac is over with. For the sake of “ethics,” of course.
