‘Warcraft 2’ Movie Sequel Confirmed? Duncan Jones Casts Hope For ‘World Of Warcraft’ Movie Trilogy Characters [Rumor/Spoilers]
A Warcraft 2 movie sequel has WoW fans hoping to see a true World Of Warcraft movie that delves into the story and history provided by the long-running series. Warcraft director Duncan Jones just hit the macro button for the spoiler rumors since he seems to be hinting that a Warcraft 2 release date is possible in the coming years. Better yet, those favorite WoW characters may be in our future.
[UPDATE] Check out our latest article on the Warcraft 2 sequel, where Orgrim Doomhammer actor Rob Kazinsky discusses what he knows. For WoW fans wanting to know more about the backstory of the first RTS trilogy, check out our Warcraft 2 spoilers article which discusses what story elements are necessary for a Warcraft 3 movie.
When the 2016 Warcraft movie was first announced, many fans assumed a World Of Warcraft movie was in the works. After all, Warcraft 3 may be a very popular RTS game, but it’s the World Of Warcraft MMO which took Blizzard’s series to stardom. Whatever our expectations, that’s not what we received.
The Warcraft movie is a retelling of Warcraft 1: Orcs And Humans, the MS-DOS video game released about 20 years ago. Thus, the Warcraft story is focused on the First War, an event which took place many in-game years before the events of the World Of Warcraft story. The Warcraft movie also expanded on the lore provided by the video games and short novels by introducing new characters like Lady Taria, Callan, Aloman, Kultiran, and Varis. But this focus on an earlier time meant we did not get to see World Of Warcraft characters like the Undead (which did not exist yet), nor other favorites like the Night Elves, Blood Elves, Death Knights, Worgen, Horde Paladins, and many more.
In an interview with Man Made Movies, Duncan Jones explained that he wanted to lay a foundation upon which many a Warcraft sequel could be built upon.
“Peter Jackson did a magnificent job of ‘setting the table’ for Tolkein’s universe with his first Lord of the Rings film. I know that my job in this first film is to establish certain characters, places and culture while telling a story that a broad audience can be excited by!” Jones explained. “Hopefully, if I have done my job right, people will want to know and see more! There is certainly plenty more to tell! … I would love to be part of that process of expanding on the lore that makes up Warcraft, but it will all depend on what you, the audience, think of our first film!”

In the rest of the interview, Jones discussed story elements you can see yourself by watching the Warcraft movie, but it is abundantly clear he would like to make a Warcraft trilogy if possible. The goal was to start the Warcraft film trilogy when the Orcs met humans in first contact so the audience had “fresh” eyes and a deeper understanding of why the conflict started in the first place.
“When I went to talk to Chris Metzen and the guys at Blizzard, we both saw things the same way,” Jones said. “A Warcraft film should not be about a good race of humans battling an evil race of orcs! Warcraft should be about heroes on both sides trying to avoid a conflict, when villains leave them no choice.”
On Twitter, Duncan Jones has made it clear that he plans on doing a Warcraft sequel movie if he’s allowed.
“If it becomes an option, I’d love to,” Jones told one fan after he was asked if he would do Warcraft 2. “Don’t think we are quite there yet, but on the way, and doing good. I’m desperate to do Taurens. We’ll just have to wait and see if we get the chance,”
While a Warcraft 2 movie sequel has yet to be confirmed officially, the Warcraft box office numbers are more than enough incentive to give the green light on the project. Some are calling Warcraft the best-performing video game movie ever, so it should not be too long before you see your favorite WoW character on the big screen.
