Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev To Reunite On ‘The Vampire Diaries’? Will Dobrev Return As Elena Or Katherine?

Fans have a lot to look forward to in Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries .

While the new season might be the last, the biggest question is whether or not Nina Dobrev will reprise her role and reunite with Ian Somerhalder .

According to Movie News Guide , there is a strong possibility that Dobrev will make one last cameo on The Vampire Diaries before the show calls it quits.

If Dobrev does appear on the hit show, will she come back as Elena or Katherine?

Although it makes sense for Dobrev to return as Elena, there is a chance that she will make a cameo as Katherine instead. Either way, fans will be thrilled to see Dobrev and Somerhalder side by side for one last time.

Dobrev has been a mainstay on the series since its freshman year. Things changed, however, after Dobrev and Somerhalder got romantically involved and then ended their relationship.

Following the breakup, Dobrev parted ways with the show, but she refused to admit that Somerhalder was the reason for her departure.

Ever since their split, fans have waited anxiously for a reunion on the show. According to Ecumenical News , creator Julie Plec is confident that Dobrev will return during the show’s final season.

Somerhalder has already declared that Season 8 will be his last, and Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie, also confirmed her exit. With the show losing so many pivotal characters, it strongly appears as though this next year will be the last.

Of course, there is a possibility that Dobrev will not return to the show, even if Season 8 is its final go. After all, last season moved on without Dobrev’s character and managed to generate success in the process.

With a new storyline in full swing, it might prove difficult working Dobrev back into the mix.

At the same time, the only way Elena can come back from her deep sleep is if Bonnie dies. That could happen if Bonnie sacrifices herself for Damon, which would open the door for Elena’s return.

If Bonnies doesn’t die, then Katherine is Dobrev’s only hope of returning.

Whatever ends up happening, it is clear that Season 8 will likely be the final season of The Vampire Diaries . With Ian Somerhalder announcing his imminent departure, it is hard to see the show going on without him.

That being said, the Parent Herald is reporting that Season 8 might not be The Vampire Diaries final year.

Shortly after making his surprising announcement, Somerhalder backtracked and apologized for making it sound like the series was ending. If the ratings pick up in the new season, then Plec and the network might consider moving forward with one more year.

However, this is easier said than done. After all, the show experienced a large decrease in ratings ever since Dobrev left in Season 6. In fact, the network even moved The Vampire Diaries to a new night in hopes of garnering a larger audience.

If Dobrev returns to the show in Season 8 and the ratings improve as a result, there is a chance that she will remain for Season 9 while Somerhalder leaves.

Right now, it simply too soon to determine what will happen next season.

However things turn out, it appears as though fans can expect an appearance by Dobrev at some point in the season. Whether or not this turns into something bigger is yet to be seen.

Until more information is released, fans will have to guess if Dobrev returns as Elena or Katherine in Season 8.

The new season of The Vampire Diaries is scheduled to start October 21 on the CW.
