Nick Cannon’s ‘Divorce Papers’ Is Really An Ode To The Divorce Lawyers Who ‘Cause Most Of The Friction’ Between Divorcees

Nick Cannon caught his ex-wife Mariah Carey off-guard with his release of “Divorce Papers,” a freestyle rap that reveals some intense details about the ex-couple’s divorce settlement proceedings and more. Starting his monotone rap off with “I guess I have to talk about it,” he goes on to speak about some serious topics that many people overlooked while focusing on the ironic Mariah Carey and Eminem reference.

In actuality, “Divorce Papers,” was the result of Nick Cannon venting about his many issues, only some of which were related to Mariah Carey and his on-going divorce settlement. In a recent interview with E! News, Cannon tells the story behind his freestyle.

“My purpose for creating this ‘Divorce Papers’ freestyle was not to feed the tabloid chatter, or even to diffuse it. This was strictly a creative way for me to express my frustrations with the media, the naysayers, myself and ultimately with the voices in my head.

“One late night in my studio, after hearing the recent accusations against me and my character, I turned on my drum machine, found this amazing Willie Hutch sample, looped it, and went into the booth and let it all out. It felt great!”

Mariah and Nick were frequently photographed together after their divorce, appearing to be friends and co-parenting their children. It wasn’t until the divorce proceedings began that Nick and Mariah started going their separate ways. Nick Cannon was not ready to sign the divorce papers, but not for the reasons stated in most tabloids. Nick Cannon blames the lawyers for breaking up his family in the freestyle. He recently confirms the meaning of certain lyrics in an interview with People magazine.

“I was like, ‘You want Divorce Papers? Well, here you go! The lawyer’s line was also me releasing a little frustration at the attorneys on both sides because lawyers always think they control the clients and they cause most of the friction, especially since my ex and I get along.”

Nick Cannon makes claims that his lawyers didn’t speak up enough during his divorce proceedings, which dealt him a losing hand in his divorce. Contrary to popular belief, the length of time it’s taken to settle his divorce is not due to Cannon trying to get alimony from his ex-wife. Instead, it was to get custody of the children. A few bars of “Divorce Papers,” makes it clear why he has yet to sign the papers despite being pressured by Mariah Carey’s lawyers.

“My daughter said daddy why your eyes in tears/ because last time I dropped your brother off I didn’t get a call the next day and it felt like years/ and Ima be honest/ sometimes I hate to hear you’re on the other line having fun without me/ I wonder if my son will ever doubt me…/ What’s love I don’t care about it I just want my kids to be safe.”

Reportedly, Nick Cannon has still not signed the papers to make his divorce from Mariah Carey official. He is still hoping to be able to see his children beyond “visitation.” In spite of his battle with Mariah, in the E! News interview, Cannon sent his best wishes to Carey.

“My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy. I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that. When it comes to expressing myself, I take the fearless approach and that’s what I chose to do here.”
