Was Orlando Shooter Gay? Omar Mateen’s Former Wife Believes He Was
Was Orlando shooter Omar Mateen homosexual? According to his ex-wife, he may have been. The News (International) reports that Sitora Yusufiy believes her former spouse had “homosexual tendencies.” These reports come right on the heels of revelations that the mass shooter was a regular at the Florida nightclub where he allegedly claimed the lives of 50 people.
Sitora Yusufiy was married to Mateen in the year 2009, for just around three months. During their brief marriage, Sitora alleges that Omar Mateen was abusive toward her. The New York Times reports that Mateen beat his former wife and confiscated her paychecks, keeping her isolated in their home.
“He was not a stable person. He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that…He seemed like a normal human being. He was a very private person.”
It was with the help of her parents that Sitora Yusufiy fled from her allegedly abusive husband. During a recent interview, the former wife of the alleged Orlando shooter recalled the moment she left him for good.
“He tried to reach in his back pocket, I don’t know if he had a gun with him, but my mother felt that and she screamed out. That was the last time I saw him.”
Omar Mateen has been outed as possibly gay more than once over the past days since the horrific shooting that left several people dead. Not only had he reportedly been a regular at the Pulse Nightclub, but the accused mass killer also allegedly had a profile on Grindr, an app dedicated to the gay dating scene. His former wife claims that his own father called him gay in front of her during their brief, three-month marriage. She recalled that she had met Mateen on Myspace back in 2008 and married him after a very short dating period. She never looked back after leaving her allegedly abusive husband, but that all changed this past week when she found out about what he had done in Orlando.
“I had let that chapter of my life go a long time ago. It’s somebody that hurt me and traumatized me.”
The Orlando shooter’s former spouse has also expressed shock that he had appeared to become entangled with radical Islam. She claims that he was never “that religious,” and that he had once spent his free time working out in gyms. Meanwhile, Mateen’s father has claimed that the mass shooting had nothing to do with religion. He claims that his son “became angry” after witnessing two men kissing one another in Miami. Nonetheless, this doesn’t explain why the accused Orlando shooter spent a lot of time at the very gay nightclub where he ultimately claimed the lives of at least 50 people. It also doesn’t explain why he reportedly had a profile on the dating app Grindr.

Whether or not Omar Mateen was a self-conflicted homosexual, it’s hard to exactly determine why he entered Pulse nightclub and opened fire on its occupants. Authorities are investigating possible ties with Islamic terrorist groups, which is information that has been met with mixed reactions. It should be noted, however, that the accused Orlando shooter pledged his allegiance to ISIS during the horrifying incident that ended in so much bloodshed.
