‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Rumors: EP Reveals Meredith May Have New Love Interest In Season 13
Grey’s Anatomy rumors are swirling after a recent interview by the show’s executive producer revealed that Meredith could have a new love interest in the upcoming season.
E! News was the first to report the rumors. The media outlet quoted EP Betsy Beers at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, as she acknowledged that fans of Grey’s Anatomy recognized the sparks igniting between the show’s lead character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and her longtime guy pal Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).
“I think there’s something about them where fans sometimes feel like that might be inevitable, so they’re getting ahead of it. So I don’t think it surprises me because I think it’s a logical place to go. Look, they’re best friends, so I think emotionally—and I’ve always been a giant Alex fan, like from the beginning.”
While the Grey’s Anatomy showrunner was able to create excitement by announcing a potential new love interest for Meredith, Beers also acknowledged that Alex was already in a relationship with Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington). Disrupting the relationship between Karev and Wilson could upset as many Grey’s Anatomy fans as a potential relationship between Meredith and her longtime friend would excite, according to the EP.
“From my perspective, I understand the reaction because I think you also just love these two people and you want them both to be happy, and that’s a natural thing too. But then there’s so many Alex-Jo fans — like, the Alex-Jo fans are crazyballs! So it’s nice — there’s a little bit of something for everybody right now.”
Until this month, any romance between Meredith and Alex was more than speculative because neither individual had signed a contract to be on Grey’s Anatomy Season 13. UPI reported that the contract Ellen Pompeo signed made her one of the highest-paid actresses in television, although exact information about the pact has not been made available.
On Monday, news broke that four more actors had signed new contracts for Grey’s Anatomy to keep them with the show. In addition to Justin Chambers, UPI reported that Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) signed pacts to return to show for Season 13.
Ultra-successful show creator Shonda Rimes recently told the Hollywood Reporter why she believed Grey’s Anatomy has survived for 12 seasons and was renewed for another. “The audience truly identifies with Ellen Pompeo,” Shonda Rimes said in the interview. “We are following this woman’s journey and the journey of all these people with her.”
Deadline reported that Grey’s Anatomy is ABC’s highest-rated show in key demographics and ranked among television’s top five dramas after a strong performance this past season. Grey’s Anatomy EP Betsy Beers added that the show reaches multiple generations as a reason the series has excelled.
“We’re also in this amazing situation of having a whole new generation of people who are discovering it in different platforms, and that’s incredibly exciting where we’ll be noticing on Twitter, a lot of those followers are very young, they’re in their teens. And then we’ll also hear from people in their 30’s and people in their 50’s. So it’s exciting that we’re able to cross generations and, to me, that’s certainly part of the longevity, is there are different generations watching.”
Thus far, only one actress from Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 has decided to leave the show. The 40-year-old actress who played Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) announced at the end of the season that she would not be returning after her decade-long run with the show.
“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now I’m taking some welcome time off. I send my love to Ellen [and] the rest of the cast and crew.”
