‘Oogieloves’ Has Worst Box Office Weekend In History

The new kid’s movie Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure set a box-office record this weekend. Unfortunately, it was one that they had hoped to avoid.

According to Variety, Oogieloves had the the lowest per-screen average ever for a wide release.

The Huffington Post reports that Oogieloves was released in 2,160 theaters this weekend but only managed to bring in $448,000. That averages out to just over $200 per theater. Which, with an average movie ticket costing $8, means that only about two dozen people saw the movie at each theater.

The new movie was designed to be interactive. Kids in the theaters were supposed to sing and dance along as they helped plan Shluufy’s birthday party. Oogieloves featured cameos from Chazz Palmentieri, Christopher Lloyd and Cloris Leachman but failed to draw any family interest at the box office.

According to Zap2it, it cost between $50 million and $60 million to produce and market Oogieloves.

The new movie, which has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, replaces the 2008 movie Delgo as the movie with the worst box office performance during its opening weekend.

At the other end of the box office, The Possession brought in $17.7 million to make it the Labor Day Weekend winner. Lawless came in second with $9.7 million, while The Expendables 2 ,The Bourne Legacy , and Paranorman rounded out the top five.
