‘Suicide Squad’ Main Villain: Director David Ayer Drops A Big Hint

Without question, Suicide Squad is one of the most anticipated films to release this summer. Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment have a lot riding on this movie, especially after the critical failure of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. According to Screen Rant, rumor has it there is already talks of a sequel to come in 2018, in addition to multiple spin-off films in the works.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead!

Screen Rant reports that fans have responded positively at the film screenings and the marketing campaign is clearly winning over fans. The colorful and stylish footage from the trailer captures the tone of the Suicide Squad comic and its high-octane action sequences look well done. It’s no wonder there is hype for the film. Suicide Squad all-stars include Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and The Joker (Jared Leto), along with other squad members, and they are tasked to go up against a dangerous enemy. The studio has not confirmed who the enemy is but the Hollywood Report states that the Enchantress is rumored as the big bad. However, Screen Rant reports that the enemy, “Eyes of the Adversary,” may be the villains to look out for.

Via ComicBookMovie, director David Ayer and producer Charles Roven addressed the mystery surrounding who the big villain is in the Suicide Squad.

“Let’s just say, when [the Suicide Squad is] called in to do this mission by Amanda [Waller], these are one of the things they encounter. They don’t know how they got here, but they’re weird and dangerous and yet they’re wearing military uniforms.”

This is getting more and more mysterious. The threat factor is increased by implying that maybe it’s not just one enemy, but a whole army of crazies the Suicide Squad has to fend off. To take on the world’s worst villains, they would have to be skilled killers and have heavy firepower. The lingering question is, who are the Eye of the Adversary? Where do they come from?

Sorry, you can’t look to comic book cannon for the answer to this question. There are no “Eyes of the Adversary” in any DC lore. Maybe it’s a group of characters that are made just for the movie.

You can catch a glimpse of these adversaries in the trailer. That’s if you pause it at the 1:58 mark of the second Suicide Squad trailer. It’s not a clear view, but from what the Hollywood Reporter saw, it looks like the adversary appears to be human but are covered in some type of slimy goo. The trailer is pretty fast-paced and it’s hard to catch details of what this adversary looks like.

Then again, the “Eyes” could be magical in origin. If the Enchantress is the villain, it would make sense that these odd creatures would be minions doing her bidding. That could explain why you don’t see her in many Suicide Squad group shots. Further evidence from Cinema Blend suggests Enchantress is the villain by indicating that a supernatural force has the city under attack.

Enchantress is a member of the Suicide Squad via the comics, and it remains to be seen what type of magical destruction the Enchantress can cause. She is known for being unstable and unable to control her powers at times, so her character can swing either way.

Until the studio or David Ayer confirms who the villain is, fans will be left to speculate.

Are you excited for the Suicide Squad? The movie is slated for a U.S. release on August 5, 2016.
