There’s little debating that the sex scenes in Outlander are an important part of character development. For Sam Heughan , however, getting under the sheets has become “so not sexy.”
Heughan recently opened up about his intimacy with co-star Caitriona Balfe in front of the camera and revealed how things have become “almost mechanical.”
Despite the routine of the scenes, Gold Derby reports that Heughan is well aware how important sex is to the main storyline.
“We learn a lot about our characters through their sex life,” Heughan shared in a video with Variety . “We always approach it like a play.”
Sex scenes are so important that both producers and writers work together to make them about more than mere seductive moments.
“You go through it and work out exactly what you want the audience to feel or see,” Heughan shared. “We talk to the producers and the writers and work out how it moves the relationship forward or what it reveals about the character.”
The second season of Outlander has already featured complicated sex scenes between Heughan’s Jamie Fraser and Balfe’s Claire Randall. As the season heads into its final leg of episodes, however, the focus is set to shift to Jamie’s fate at the Battle of Culloden.
According to Enstarz , Jamie will confront a life-threatening experience at the battle while Claire travels forward in time to meet with her daughter, Brianna.
Not only does Claire inform Brianna about her ability to time travel, she also reveals the identity of her real parents.
Ultimately, fans can expect a finale full of drama and heart-stopping action. Based on the synopsis, Jamie might be saying goodbye to those he loves.
“When Jamie’s last ditch attempts to deter The Prince fail, he and Claire come up with a dangerous plan – which Dougal overhears, inciting him to a murderous rage,” the official synopsis reads. “Jamie must do everything he can to save the ones he loves, even if it means saying goodbye to some – or all – of them.”
Although fans of the books might think they know what is ahead, Heughan explained how this season might not end as expected.
“Ultimately the show has always been about relationships. Not only is that the climax of history, but it’s also the climax of the relationships that are happening at the time,” he said in an interview with IGN . “It’s all doomed, and we can’t stop history from happening. [Season 2] certainly has a climax. [Ron Moore] has also got some surprises.”
While fans have to wait to see what unfolds in the remaining episodes of Outlander , Scotland Now is reporting that Heughan has his mind set on expanding his career outside of the television industry.
Naturally, the actor has plans to follow in the steps of one William Shatner, better known as Captain James T. Kirk.
Heughan’s relationship with the Star Trek alum has been well documented online. In fact, the two have exchanged messages on social media on more than one occasion.
While Shatner shared how Heughan would be perfect as the next James Bond, Heughan returned the favor by revealing how he would love to play Captain Kirk.
“There’s so many,” Heughan stated when asked about which character from Star Trek he would like to play. “It depends on which genre or series you are talking about. Is it Deep Space 9 ? Is it Next Gen ? Kirk would be amazing as I have got to know William Shatner. I would love to follow in his footsteps in space.”
Of course, Shatner didn’t appear to mind Heughan’s answer one bit.
“#smart an,” Shatner wrote on Twitter with a link to Heughan’s interview.
