Shawn Mendes Drops New Track ‘Treat You Better’ — Is It About Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello?
Shawn Mendes just dropped his new track “Treat You Better,” and fans are now speculating that the hit could be about his relationship with Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello.
Shawn previously spoke out about his inspiration for the song in a fan question-and-answer session on Twitter, where Mendes admitted that the concept came from a longstanding friendship with a girl who was in a bad relationship with someone else.
“The concept was just about being really good friends with a girl, like for a long time, and knowing that her relationship is in a really bad place, the boyfriend doesn’t treat her right,” Shawn told fans in a video posted on the social media site on June 3.
“[It’s] kind of just being, like, ‘Listen, I know I could treat you better. There’s no point in going on with this bad relationship type of thing,” Shawn added.

Mendes’s intriguing big reveal about the concept behind “Treat You Better” on social media got fans speculating that Shawn could well be singing about his long friendship with Fifth Harmony’s Camila
According to Australia Network News, fans “have pointed out subtle hints” that they think could allude to Shawn singing about Cabello on the track, with a slew of Shawn and Fifth Harmony fans taking to Twitter to speculate about whether or not Mendes is actually singing about Camila on “Treat You Better.”
“TREAT YOU BETTER IS ABOUT CAMILA AND AUSTIN OMG SHAWN’S SUCH A SWEET LITTLE MUFFIN,” @PatryCruz05 speculated on Twitter, referring to Camila’s past relationship with Austin Mahone.
“This is about Camila I swear,” @PatMoreno08 then wrote on the social media site about Shawn Mendes’s new single, while Twitter user @camilacabskie posted, “Treat you better is about Camila! That’s why I listen to it 24/7.”
Neither Shawn Mendes nor Camila Cabello have confirmed or denied the speculation that Cabello is the girl in question in the song, though Camila has made no secret of the fact that she’s a pretty big fan of Mendes and his latest release.
Twitter account @CamilasSpotify revealed that Cabello was listening to the track on Spotify June 4, while she also took to Twitter to praise Mendes for his new track.
“Duuuuude!!!! u sound amazing on treat u better,” Cabello tweeted out on June 3. “I just bought it! so excited for you @ShawnMendes.”
But despite all the social media speculation, both Shawn and Camila have repeatedly denied that they’re currently in a relationship, despite Mendes gushing over Cabello in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine.
Shawn recently admitted to the magazine that he “loves” Cabello and even confessed that the Fifth Harmony star “blows [his] mind,” but he once again denied rampant reports claiming that the two are officially dating.
When asked about Cabello in the new interview, Mendes admitted that he thinks Camila, who he teamed up with on the track “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” is “phenomenal,” but stated once and for all, “We aren’t dating.”
“I love her and she’s so talented. She’s one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart… musically, she blows my mind,” Mendes added of Cabello.
The Cabello and Mendes dating rumors originally began circulating back in September 2015 after an insider alleged to E! News that the couple were officially dating after growing close while they were both on the road touring with Austin Mahone.
Although Camila and Shawn never confirmed E! News’ report that they were, at least at one point, a couple, an insider told the site at the time that Camila and Shawn “really like each other and laugh nonstop when they’re together.”
