Skinny Disney characters will be on display this Christmas at the high-end department store Barney’s as part of an electric light show and moving art film.
The characters — Minnie, Daisy, and Goofy, among others — will be featured in the “Electric Holiday” campaign masquerading as stick-thin models, the Telegraph reported. The moving art show will be on display at the luxury store’s Madison Avenue location in New York City with various exclusive Disney-themed designer objects on sale inside the store.
The skinny Disney characters on display at Barney’s are just one of the fashion tilts the beloved characters will be taking. Disney Princesses will be featured in Harrods’ displays, and, in the UK, many of the best fashion designers are showing off couture creations for Minnie Mouse at London Fashion Week, the Telegraph reported .
To remain true to the true spirit of the characters, Barney’s designers worked closely with Disney on the skinny interpretations.
Barney’s creative director Dennis Freedman told WWD that he wanted the skinny Disney characters to remain true to “the world of the Paris fashion shows, of fashion, of people in fashion, of the rituals, all of the idiosyncrasies. The important thing to me was always that it had to be authentic. It really had to hit the nail on the head in every detail.”
But Freeman also acknowledged that the skinny Disney characters would need some dramatic changes.
“The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.”
