Kate Middleton: Future Queen Or Destroyer Of The Monarchy?

Kate Middleton, the future Queen of England, and upcoming king, Prince William, are destroying the future of the British monarchy, says William Hanson in an article for the Daily Mail. Hanson, considered an expert in etiquette, says the royal couple are trying to be “too much like us.” The royals are supposed to set themselves apart from the rest of us, he says, and their behavior and body language should match their elevated status.

One moment at the Chelsea Flower Show caused Hanson concern. Prince William momentarily forgot which shrubs they planted in their garden.

“Babe, we’ve got loads of those,” his wife Duchess Kate reportedly told him.

Kate Middleton, the future queen, and Prince “Babe” William, destroying the monarchy?

Hanson believes so. Like their subjects, the royals often have pet names for each other. Hanson believes the Duke of Edinburgh calls Queen Elizabeth, “Cabbage.” But while “Cabbage” is quirky, “Babe” strikes Hanson as far too common.

Prince Harry broke a figurative piece off the crown too, even getting his grandmum, the Queen, to do a video with the Obamas for the 2016 Invictus Games.

“The Invictus promo video is the next nail in the coffin in the slow death of stately behaviour,” said Hanson.

He did say he didn’t know how much arm-twisting Harry applied to the Queen to do the promo.

Kate Middleton, the future queen, and William clearly aren’t destroying the monarchy on her own. Hanson also cites a photobombing episode involving Prince Harry over the weekend.

The elder royals are above such things, where they should be, says Hanson.

Laying aside the 007 opening of the 2012 London Olympic Games, Hanson cites Queen Elizabeth’s mystique as a barrier between royalty and celebrity. We know everything there is to know about celebrities because they can’t wait to tell us. Elizabeth, on the other hand, has never given an interview.

Hanson likes Prince Charles’ pressed suits and allegedly ironed shoelaces. With Elizabeth’s Olympics appearance, the elder royals seem “charmingly bonkers” without being common.

Is Kate Middleton, the future Queen of England, destroying the monarchy to be more likeable now?

Hanson says Kate and Charles, and Harry, need to stop behaving like their subjects.

“I completely get that you may just want to live quiet normal, ordinary lives,” Hanson said, “but that’s not part of the bargain.”

Hanson’s word “bargain” brings money into play. The Independent cites a study by Brand Finance that took into account several factors to gauge the value of the monarchy to the UK’s economy. They placed that value at ?155 billion for 2015. They credit ?152 million of that to the “Kate Effect.” But campaign group Republic says “the monarchy costs the UK ?334 million a year.”

So, Kate Middleton, the future queen, is destroying her own upcoming monarchy financially, too. Republic wants to get rid of the royals and their expenses. Hanson says Kate and William’s common behavior and the money are tied together.

“We don’t fund them to be like us,” Hanson pointed out. “If they are just like any other family, then what’s the need to subsidise them? Why not give us the funding instead? It’ll play right into the Republic campaign’s under moisturised hands.”

Unlike Republic, Hanson believes the royals play an important role in British society. He says they set a higher standard for the common Brit to try to attain. Hanson doesn’t want to see Kate and William bringing their next baby home like regular folks in the family car. He wants that kid riding in style, in a chauffeured Bentley.
