Donald Trump: Hispanic RNC Staffer Resigns Amid Growing Concerns About Nominee’s Rhetoric — Was ‘Uncomfortable’ Working For Trump

Donald Trump’s rhetoric in campaign speeches, which many regard as anti-Hispanic, appears to have brought about the resignation of the Republican National Committee’s head of Hispanic media relations, The New York Times is reporting.

Ruth Guerra, The Times stated, “who is of Mexican descent and was in charge of carrying the party’s message to Hispanic voters,” will be moving on to head up the American Action Network, a Super-PAC aligned with the Republican Party that will be spending millions on Congressional and Senate races, and not focused on the national election to help Trump win the presidency.

According to two sources who requested anonymity, The Times reported that Guerra was “uncomfortable working for Mr. Trump” and defending his comments on Spanish-speaking media.

“It is relatively rare for party staff members to leave the national committee in the midst of a presidential campaign unless they are going to work directly for the nominee,” The Times said.

When asked about how she felt about Donald Trump, Guerra didn’t answer, instead focusing on her “great nearly two years at the R.N.C.,” and about how she was “excited” to begin working for American Action Network.

Guerra is not the only young Republican who has left the Republican National Committee “since Mr. Trump became the party’s presumptive nominee,” The Times said. “Discontent with Mr. Trump runs deep among Republican strategists and staff members, particularly with younger ones.”

The discontent stems from comments that Trump has made about Hispanics, including his announcement to run for president a year ago, when he referred to many who come across the border illegally as “rapists.”

More recently, Trump brought up the ethnicity of a federal judge who is presiding over a case involving Trump University at a San Diego rally.

“The judge, who happens to be, we believe, Mexican,” Trump said to his booing audience. The judge Gonzalo Curiel, was born in America to Hispanic parents, The Times pointed out.

Meanwhile, legal experts are expressing their concerns about Trump’s comments about Judge Curiel, whom he also called “a hater.”

“Having a presidential candidate embroiled in litigation totally unrelated to the political system… that is what is so novel about this. And then you add to this the personal criticism,” Arthur Hellman, a law professor at the University of Pittsburgh, told The Washington Post. “It’s personal all the way, and that’s what makes this different.”

The Post pointed out that Trump appeared to threaten Judge Curiel when he said in his San Diego speech, “They ought to look into Judge Curiel, because what Judge Curiel is doing is a total disgrace.”

Trump’s comments on Curiel “have prompted questions about how he would react to adverse judicial decisions should he become president,” The Post stated.

Relationships between presidents and judges can also be contentious. The Post pointed to 2010, when President Barack Obama criticized the Supreme Court, five of whose members were sitting just feet away but were unable to respond during his State of the Union address. Republicans criticized Obama for his comment, which they felt was inappropriate.

But Trump’s comments on Curiel are different, The Post said, both because of “their personal nature” and because of Trump saying that someone “ought to look into” him.

What do you think? Should Republicans be concerned about Hispanics like Ruth Guerra being uncomfortable with Donald Trump and his comments, particularly about Judge Gonzalo Curiel?
