‘Outlander’ Renewed For Seasons 3 And 4 — Everything We Know So Far

Outlander fans have a lot to be excited about as the series has been renewed for Seasons 3 and 4. The popular time-travel drama stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan and is based off the series of novels written by Diana Gabaldon. The show is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore with each season covering one book from Gabaldon’s ongoing series.

According to Variety, Season 3 will cover Gabaldon’s Voyager while Season 4 will be based on Drums of Autumn. Season 3 will follow the romance between Claire (Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Heughan) as they embark on new adventures in all new countries.

But the renewal for two seasons instead of the usual one shouldn’t come as a big surprise for the popular show. The double renewal is also a clear message from Starz about its extreme confidence in the show.

Outlander is like nothing seen before on television.” CEO of Starz Chris Albrecht stated in a press release, via Hypable. “From its depiction of a truly powerful female lead character, to the devastating decimation of the Highlander way of life, to what is a rarely seen genuine and timeless love story, it is a show that not only transports the viewer, but inspires the passion and admiration of its fans.”

Albrecht also praised not only author Diana Gabaldon but the team that works to get the novels to the screen. “There are no better storytellers for Outlander than this team, both in front and behind the camera.”

With the show currently in its second season, Moore told E! News that the upcoming third season will differ a lot from the politically driven current season, describing it as “much more of an adventure tale.”

Season 1 averaged 5 million multiplatform viewers per episode while the Season 2 premiere set the all-time Starz premiere record with nearly 1.5 million viewers.

Meanwhile, the renewal for two more seasons has fans speculating what will unfold for Jamie and Claire, even though Season 2 hasn’t even finished airing.

Executive producer Moore has hinted at some possibilities. Besides saying Season 3 will be less political, Scotland Now states that the third novel Voyager centers around Claire and Jamie’s travels across the world on a variety of ships.

Moore was also asked about the preparations for Season 3, specifically about working with ships. “Very exciting to talk about the ships.” Moore stated via Twitter. “Whole season looks like a lot of fun. Very challenging – but that’s Outlander.”

Moore also talked about adapting Voyager for the screen, saying that although the novel is an easier story, production is still very complex.

But Moore wasn’t the one who has spoken about the upcoming third and fourth seasons.

Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, presidents of U.S. programming and production for Sony Pictures Television, said in a joint statement that “The world of Jamie and Claire is expansive and emotionally complex. The audience has rewarded Outlander with their praise and loyalty, and we know we will deliver the best seasons yet in the years ahead. Starz has been an incredible partner and has truly helped shape this into one of the most iconic premiere series on the air today.”

Ships, new countries, romance, whatever Seasons 3 and 4 bring, it will no doubt continue the show’s record-breaking run as it continues to build up its fan base.
