‘Walking Dead’ Creator Disappointed In ‘Game Of Thrones’ Creator

Two of the most popular shows on television right now are The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. They are very similar, both genre fantasy shows based on popular source materials. They also both air on Sunday nights – but don’t compete with each other – and both get amazing ratings. However, Screen Rant reported that Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman took a shot at Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin in a recent interview.

One area that Walking Dead and Game of Thrones is very different is how possessive their creators are over the shows. Robert Kirkman doesn’t believe that The Walking Dead AMC series should be handcuffed to his Walking Dead comic books. On the other hand, George R.R. Martin told HBO the ending of his Game of Thrones series so that they would remain faithful to his direction for his books.

According to Robert Kirkman, that was not something he thought was smart. He went as far as to say Martin should have kept the ending to the Game of Thrones books to himself.

“I would never do that. That’s the one thing I’m disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing. He should have just been like, F*** you. You make it up now, I’ll get to mine when I’m ready.”

The biggest problem with Martin demanding that the Game of Thrones HBO series follow his books direction is that Martin is a painstakingly slow writer. There is no way he will get his series to the end before HBO wraps up the Game of Thrones series. HBO can pad it out, but they have to follow Martin’s storyline, and his slow writing could cause pacing problems.

Martin doesn’t feel that fans need to worry about the Game of Thrones series spoiling his ending. Cinema Blend reported that Martin said that he is fine with whatever happens.

“There was a period where I was worried about that. Then I said, to hell with that. Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”

Game of Thrones has somewhat veered from Martin’s story at points, but Martin told them the ending and they will follow his rules to get there. It seems that if Game of Thrones ends before Martin writes his final book, he feels fans can still enjoy his written ending as well.

That is where Robert Kirkman felt that Martin went wrong. Much like Martin, Kirkman said that he knows how The Walking Dead comic book series will end. He said that he has the ending already set, but he won’t tell anyone the ending, not even the showrunners of The Walking Dead television series.

Kirkman has shown that he is not possessive of the AMC series, and The Walking Dead creator has routinely stepped aside as the show made major changes. They kept Shane alive for much longer than the comic book did. They allowed Baby Judith to live. One of the most popular characters is Daryl, and he isn’t even in The Walking Dead comics.

And the ending of The Walking Dead television series will likely be completely different from that of The Walking Dead comic books unless Kirkman decides to end the comics before the TV show is ready to conclude.

“I know how the story wraps up. The big question is when and how far in the distance that is. But I think that most people think, oh, why would he end it? It’s so successful, he’s going to keep throwing s*** at the wall to keep it going. And that’s not going to happen. You’ll eventually be able to see that it all kind of comes together.”

It is interesting to see The Walking Dead creator throwing shade at another writer, especially one as beloved as the Game of Thrones creator. However, Robert Kirkman is disappointed, and he isn’t afraid to let George R.R. Martin know it.
