Brie Larson: Will She Join The Marvel Cinematic Universe As Captain Marvel?
Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson is rumored to be in negotiations with Marvel Studios to play Captain Marvel, according to Variety. Captain Marvel, alias Carol Danvers, has been one of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters since her debut in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1968. Will Brie Larson play Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?
Captain Marvel’s standalone movie is scheduled to be the 21st movie in the MCU and the ninth film in Phase 3, after Ant-Man and the Wasp and before Avengers: Infinity War, Part II. It is tentatively scheduled for a March 8, 2019, release date. Kevin Feige, the president of production for Marvel Studios, has been searching for the right actress for the role for years. Fans have speculated that just as Hawkeye debuted in Thor and Stephen Strange was mentioned in passing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel will appear in another MCU first before her own movie is filmed. If Brie Larson is cast as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, she might make her MCU debut in Avengers: Infinity War, Part I. That movie is tentatively scheduled for release on May 4, 2018.

Captain Marvel will be produced by Kevin Feige and written by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Perlman was one of the writers on Guardians of the Galaxy. She wrote the first draft, which was later rewritten by James Gunn. LeFauve was a co-writer on Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur. A director has not been chosen for Captain Marvel yet, but it is rumored that Marvel wants to hire a female director for this movie, possibly Niki Caro or Jennifer Kent.

In the comic books, Major Carol Danvers is a United States Air Force officer. She was skilled at piloting, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and espionage before she tangled with the alien Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Danvers was caught in an explosion with Mar-Vell, also known as Captain Marvel, and her DNA was fused with his, making her a human-Kree hybrid with superior strength, endurance, flight, and precognition. First called Ms. Marvel, she later took the name Captain Marvel.
Carol Danvers should not be confused with Billy Batson, the newsboy who transformed into Captain Marvel, from Fawcett and later DC Comics, nor with Monica Rambeau, the African-American police officer who joined the Avengers as Captain Marvel, but later took the code name Photon.
Carol Danvers was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan, but the writers who most influenced her characterization were Gerry Conway and Chris Clairemont.

Screen Rant emphasized that several actresses have been mentioned as possibilities to play Captain Marvel, and it is only a rumor, through a strong one, that Brie Larson is in early talks with Marvel Studios.
Brie Larson is a singer as well as an actress. She started as a child actress, appearing in Raising Dad, Right on Track, Sleepover, and Hoot. As an adult, she has been in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 21 Jump Street, Trainwreck, and Room. Larson won an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Room. She recently finished filming Kong: Skull Island with Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki in Thor and The Avengers, and Samuel L. Jackson, who played Nick Fury in almost all the movies in the MCU, as well as the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s not impossible that either Hiddleston or Jackson put in a good word for Larson with Marvel Studios.
