WWE News: Diamond Dallas Page Reveals The Backstage Reaction To The nWo Arriving In WCW – Huge Heat
There is absolutely no doubt that one of the biggest storylines in all of wrestling history happened back in 1996 when Scott Hall and Kevin Nash left WWE and burst onto the scene in WCW. This ultimately led to the formation of the New World Order (nWo), and it changed the face of wrestling forever. Now, some 20 years later, Diamond Dallas Page is talking about how all of that came to be and how the backstage reaction included a lot of heat.
It’s hard for anyone to deny that Diamond Dallas Page will go down as one of the biggest names in wrestling history. He’s done so many things in the ring across numerous promotions and he’s always been one of those standout names that all fans love. That was evident by his huge ovation at WrestleMania 32 when he surprisingly showed up after not telling anyone about it, according to 411 Mania.
In an interesting twist, DDP has now revealed that he was actually an integral part of getting the nWo started in WCW, and it saved him from being buried by them.Wrestling Inc. did an interview with Page where he talks about two of his very close friends in real life – Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. A lot of people know it, but DDP was a big reason that Hall and Nash returned to WCW in 1996 after having left the company for WWE a number of years before.
One thing that Wrestling Inc. asked is if The Outsiders knew just how big a part Page played in getting them signed.
“They knew. (Eric) Bischoff knew. They didn’t have the nWo name then, but it all started in my garage. Bischoff puts that over in the nWo DVD, then I never get mentioned again. I’m like, seriously? (laughs).”
When Scott Hall entered WCW in 1996, Page said that everyone around was very excited. It was even more exciting at first when Kevin Nash arrived on the scene too. Page says that after that, things got a bit ugly as The Outsiders began running over anyone and everyone on WCW television.
That is when the jealousy kicked in and it brought about a lot of backstage heat for the nWo, and it actually kind of helped the storyline grow even more.
“We’re getting two of their stars red hot. Then they started killing everybody. That was heat. Wait a minute, these two guys are killing everybody? Then when Hulk switched, the really killed everybody. They violated groups of guys. Everybody on top has a ton of haters. It was really unique for me…because both of those guys I helped come in. Both were legitimate friends of mine…killing everybody and I was allowed (to go under the radar). Nobody was really paying attention to me. I saw Sting like, leave, and I thought ‘who’s going to fight these guys?'”
Diamond Dallas Page said that this ultimately ended up leading to the moment in the ring when he delivered a Diamond Cutter to Scott Hall and threw Kevin Nash over the top rope. He said that is one of the most memorable moments of his career because he was able to get the better of two of his best friends.
On top of that, Page was able to stand tall as a strong and powerful force against the nWo.
There is little doubt that the New World Order will always be one of the most powerful stables in all of wrestling history, and it’s kind of cool to see one of the hidden names who was behind it. It’s hard for any longtime wrestling fan to forget those moments when Hall appeared on Nitro, Nash appeared next to him, and Hulk Hogan turned on the fans. After all this time, it’s interesting to see that Diamond Dallas Page had such a big impact on the wrestling world in more ways than anyone knew. He was a huge part in bringing in both Kevin Nash and Scott Hall which ultimately led to the formation of the nWo. Sure, there have been a lot of backstage heat from all those in WCW and after they left WWE, but there is no denying the gigantic change it brought to professional wrestling.
