Fan Made ‘Captain Planet’ Trailer Will Make You Wish The Movie Was Real [Video]
If you fondly remember Ted Turner’s eco-friendly superhero Captain Planet, then the fan-made trailer for a movie which currently does not exist is designed specifically to make you giddy with nostalgia. According to Cinema Blend, director Jay Diaz and producers Noah Baron, Matt Kohler and Robert Santiago put the clip together, and as someone who spent quite a bit of time watching the show during his youth, I can honestly say that he has done the show justice. Crafting a Captain Planet movie may seem impossible to some, but Diaz makes the the concept seem oddly plausible.
However, this isn’t the first time someone has attempted to bring Captain Planet into a live-action format. Hotel Rwanda star Don Cheadle teamed up with Funny or Die to produce his own unique spin on the big blue superhero. Although amusing in its own right, the clip doesn’t really take the material too seriously. Diaz, on the other hand, seems to have an affinity for the original show, as evidenced by the faux trailer’s attention to detail.
Although the prospect of a live-action Captain Planet movie may seem a little far-fetched, a quick look at Internet Movie Database shows that such a project is currently in development. Optioned by production company Angry Films, Captain Planet is slated for release sometime in 2014. Since the project is listed as “in development,” there’s a very strong possibility this movie may never get off the ground. Keeping your fingers crossed may become quite painful down the road.
Created by Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle, Captain Planet and the Planeteers first hit airwaves in North America in 1990. The series, which explored the heroic adventures of an eco-friendly superhero and his ethnically-diverse sidekicks, ran for a total of six seasons before signing off in 1996. Although it’s been gone for several years, the film still has a strong and very loyal cult followinig.
