Blake Shelton Reveals That Gwen Stefani Saved His Life
Blake Shelton opened up about his highly public relationship with fellow Voice coach, Gwen Stefani. He revealed in an interview with CMT’s Katie Cook that Stefani saved his life last year. Shelton also believes that God put the two together.
Blake Shelton was as surprised as everyone else at the development of his relationship with Gwen Stefani, at first. While the country superstar and the No Doubt frontwoman may seem like an odd mix, it all makes “perfect sense” now.
“It’s not something anybody could’ve seen coming besides God I guess because it doesn’t look like it would make sense. All I can tell you is that it does. It just makes the most perfect sense for us and where we’re at in our lives.”
Blake Shelton said he didn’t really know Gwen all that well despite having been on The Voice together. However, once they found themselves going through difficult, painful divorces at the same time, things just clicked. “I tell people all the time, ‘Gwen saved my life last year. She did,” Shelton said. The “God Gave Me You” singer added, “I think she’d tell you something similar about me.”
Blake Shelton went on to emphasize the impact Gwen Stefani had on his life. As unexpected as their love may have been, it has served a purpose bigger than simply getting over their exes. “This thing just happened. It saved my life. Period,” Shelton explained to Cook.
Gwen Stefani has said something similar about Blake Shelton. In March, she shared in an interview with Refinery29 that her “super-unexpected” relationship with Shelton also “saved” her.
“I think that when you go through what I went through, or what I’m still going through, you think you’re hopeless. You don’t know what’s going to happen. You panic. It was a really super-unexpected gift to find a friend, somebody who happened to be going through the exact same thing as me, literally mirroring my experience. I don’t think it’s an accident that that happened. It saved me.”
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton both have new albums out. They each have said their new music is the most personal of their careers’. Shelton said his album, If I’m Honest, is the most intimate look into his personal life yet. Stefani told Refinery29 her “most f***ing personal s***, ever” is on her current album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like.
Blake and Gwen used the roller coaster of emotions from the past year to fuel their latest projects. Shelton confirmed this to ET in March, just before the release of his first single from If I’m Honest.
“It is all on the record. I can put my life experience, whether it’s a divorce or my new girlfriend, whatever those experiences are, whatever things that are happening in my life, I have an outlet for them. I have music.”
Gwen Stefani told her songwriters and producers that she was only interested in writing what was in her heart for This Is What The Truth Feels Like. Stefani didn’t care about the charts or what her label had to say. She gave them a “mini-speech” when she walked into the recording studio, telling them that she wanted to write what she needed to say. Gwen knew she had to use her music as a source of healing.
Blake Shelton also discussed his duet with Gwen Stefani that’s featured on his album. The couple recently performed “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” on The Voice stage where it all started. Their relationship was just budding when they wrote the song together last fall. Blake Shelton admits that he was really just trying to impress Gwen when he started the song.
“It was odd because we wrote the song last fall sometime. I started the song just because I was trying to impress her and I sent it to her on like voice memo. Just texted it to her.”

As People reports, Gwen confessed to Chelsea Handler that she was afraid to even hear Blake’s song, fearing what would happen if she didn’t like it.
“He’s like, ‘I wrote this song’ and I was like ‘Whoa what if I don’t like it? I listened to it and thought ‘Oh my God, I love this!'”
Despite her worst fears, Stefani loved the song, so Blake told her to “write the rest of it.” And she did. Blake Shelton told People earlier this month that he and Gwen were “a little bit nervous” about its debut. He went on to say that the duet, which was written solely by the two of them, is “like people getting a look at something personal for the first time.”
