Warning! Spoilers ahead!

ABC shared the following synopsis of Episode 420.

“After nearly two decades, Rayna and Deacon face the facts of their storied and often tempestuous relationship. Scarlett makes a startling self-discovery in between tour dates while Gunnar performs with one of his idols, rock-music legend Sir Elton John, who guest stars as himself. Luke stops by ‘The View’ to trumpet a worthy cause—before a family emergency pulls his focus. Elsewhere, Juliette struggles to make a connection, and Layla launches her album at The Bluebird. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Raven Symoné and Paula Faris guest star as themselves.”

At the beginning of Nashville, Luke Wheeler makes a guest appearance on The View to talk about the controversy surrounding Will Lexington. The Nashville community has not taken kindly to Will being openly gay. Luke has been doing his best to stand up for Will, but he has been facing public ridicule for doing so.

On the other hand, Will has been shying away from the topic entirely. Will wants everyone to focus on his music only and just ignore the fact that he is gay, but Nashville refuses to let the topic of his sexuality go. Will makes an appearance on a Nashville radio station and the host asks him about representing the gay community. Will skirts the question and tries to steer the interview back to his new album.

Later on Nashville, Luke receives a phone call that his son, Colt, has been in an accident while at boot camp. He arrives at the hospital to find out Colt has a concussion and a broken arm. Luke’s father is already at the hospital and tells him Colt was attacked by other recruits, because of Luke’s public support of the gay community. Luke’s father makes it clear he blames Luke for the attack.

When Will arrives home from his Nashville radio interview, a man is waiting outside for him. The man tells him he also is gay, and Will coming out gave him the confidence to come out as well. The man makes it clear that whether or not Luke wants it, he is representing the gay community. Will decides he is going to face his most public critic, Cynthia Davis, on her TV show and take her on one on one.

Once Colt wakes up from all of the pain medication, he tells Luke the real story of what happened. He tells Luke he threw the first punch, because he was defending him. Colt then tells his father he is proud of him for standing up for Will.

Meanwhile on Nashville, Layla is performing at The Bluebird in honor of her new album. Before they head to The Bluebird, Avery drops Cadence off with Juliette and seems a bit jealous when he discovers Noah is at Juliette’s house. Avery proceeds to be distracted throughout Layla’s entire performance and Layla notices he isn’t focused entirely on her.

After Layla’s performance, Avery tells her he wants to swing by Juliette’s place to check on Cadence before they go out and celebrate how amazing she did. Layla doesn’t take kindly to someone else being put in front of her, even Avery’s daughter, and uses the opportunity to point out everything that wasn’t perfect about the performance, and how there wasn’t even a reason to celebrate. Avery falls for her pity party and abandons his plans to check on Cadence.

While Juliette and Noah are hanging out, Juliette starts to realize they don’t really have anything in common. He clearly cares about her and she about him, and he is even wonderful with Cadence, but they just aren’t interested in the same things. Juliette decides to end things with Noah.

Juliette and Noah aren’t the only Nashville couple in trouble. Gunnar and Scarlett still aren’t speaking to each other. As Scarlett heads off to her headphones photo shoot, Autumn Chase takes the opportunity to invite Gunnar to go see Elton John. When Gunnar and Autumn arrive to the concert, Gunnar is able to meet Elton John in person and he invites Gunnar to play with him on stage.

After the concert, Autumn comes on strong to Gunnar, telling him how amazing he is. The last time Nashville viewers see Gunnar and Autumn, they are in a hotel room, ripping off each other’s clothes.

Later on Nashville, Scarlett attends her headphones photo shoot. The photographer asks her to listen to her own music and tell her how the music makes her feel. The photographer notices Scarlett isn’t giving her real emotion, so they end up sitting down to have a little therapy session. When Scarlett returns to the shoot and starts listening to the music again, she realizes that she is still in love with Gunnar.

Nashville’s favorite couple, Deacon and Rayna, aren’t doing so well after Maddie’s emancipation. They decide it is time to visit a marriage counselor. Rayna uses some very harsh words to describe the pattern of their relationship.

“Betrayal, destruction, abandonment, forgiveness.”

After the therapy session, Deacon and Rayna barely speak to one another on the drive home. Deacon tells her he is done. Rayna asks if that is what he really wants. Deacon responds by asking Rayna what she wants. Rayna tells him she wants Maddie back. Will this be the end of Rayna and Deacon?

Don’t miss the series finale of Nashville on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 10/9c on ABC.
