‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Finale To Air Thursday, Caterina Scorsone, Kevin McKidd Talk Owen-Amelia Wedding [Spoilers]
The Season 12 finale of Grey’s Anatomy will air on Thursday, May 19, and according to the show’s promos, we can expect the wedding of the year.
Warning: There are spoilers ahead!
If you will recall, during last week’s episode, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) discussed their “pretend” marriage and how their life would be as a married couple (house, kids, etc.). Their marriage was all hypothetical talk until Amelia stopped Owen in his tracks and asked him to marry her “for real.”
Now, as the finale quickly approaches, Scorsone and McKidd are opening up about their character’s relationship and their impending nuptials.
“It does [seem fast], and it doesn’t,” McKidd told Entertainment Weekly. “These guys have been dancing around each other for quite a few seasons. They kept getting derailed, and then they’re back on track. It’s very Amelia and Owen to act this way. Whether it’s the right decision, we’ll see next season.”
It is important to note that there is a bit of a time jump from last week’s episode to the finale, and Owen and Amelia did not jump straight from engagement to a wedding. It is also important to realize that the couple’s wedding day will be complete with numerous obstacles in true Grey’s Anatomy fashion.
“The morning of the wedding, everything kind of explodes. A whole, unfortunate series of events takes place that sends Amelia into a tailspin,” Scorsone told TVLine.
The challenges facing Amelia and Owen seem to be related to those around them, particularly Amelia’s family and friends, including her sister-in-law Meredith, and Meredith’s sister Maggie.
“Having to do more with her family of origin and a perceived lack of support from her family and friends about the wedding,” Scorsone added. “That spins her out. She was gung ho to go for it, but the morning of the wedding, she’s not getting the celebration and the party that she thought she’d get by becoming this adult who’s getting married. So she’s disappointed and feeling very betrayed.”

Meredith has mixed feelings about Amelia’s relationship with Owen, the former husband of her best friend Christina Yang, who moved from Grey-Sloan hospital. When Christina left, she asked Meredith to look after Owen, and now Meredith feels like she will be betraying her friend by supporting Owen’s marriage to Amelia.
“The specter of Cristina is one of the things that’s a big spoke in the wheel for Amelia’s crisis of conscience on her wedding day,” McKidd explained. “Meredith has some feelings that are ambivalent, because Meredith is very proud and a mama bear. She was asked by Cristina to be Owen’s protector. She has her issues with Amelia. Meredith and her have a huge blowout on the wedding day.”

“Meredith encouraged her to go after Owen and stop wasting her time, so I think Amelia very bravely decided to do that,” Scorsone said. “She kind of believed that she stepped into a responsible adulthood that should be admirable. And that’s the exact moment when Meredith withdraws her approval. It confuses and devastates Amelia. There’s no way she can win approval from Meredith! I think that becomes a big piece of what’s going on with her.”
Aside from the Owen and Amelia drama and wondering whether or not they will actually say “I do,” the promos also appear to show April going into labor, making for a whole separate dramatic experience. Luckily, Amelia is oblivious as to what is going on with Owen’s best man and his ex-wife and doesn’t take April’s labor as a bad omen.
“Thankfully, Amelia is blissfully oblivious to April’s situation,” Scorsone laughed. “I think maybe that would have been the final death knell!”
The Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 finale will air Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
