Martin Scorsese’s New Film ‘The Irishman’ Will Star Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, And Joe Pesci
Film lovers everywhere are rejoicing that Martin Scorsese is teaming up with Robert De Niro for what could be the last time. According to Deadline, a deal with STX Entertainment for the international rights to a film named The Irishman that Scorsese is set to direct. The film is rumored to be sold for a price around $50 million.
This film has blockbuster written all over it. De Niro and Scorsese have put out some of the greatest cinema of all time. Goodfellas, Casino, and Taxi Driver are the perfect examples of Scorsese’s exemplary work.
Al Pacino will be starring alongside Robert De Niro in the film. The two haven’t starred together in a film since Righteous Kill, which ended up being a huge flop. They still have a chance to make up for it with The Irishman. De Niro’s Goodfellas co-star Joe Pesci is also starring in the film. It is the first time that Pacino, De Niro, and Pesci will all be working together.
The three actors haven’t been involved and attached to a movie about the mob in years. Mafia movies are arguably the specialty of these three actors. Pacino and De Niro helped create what could be the greatest film of all time, The Godfather Part II. Joe Pesci put on one of the most unforgettable performances in movie history as Tommy DeSimone in Goodfellas.
This will be the first time that Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino will work together, which should make the buzz surrounding this film even more prominent. It will be very interesting to see how well the two work together.
Mob movie fanatics probably already went home to get their “shine boxes.” The fact that these three legends are coming together for the kind of movie that they absolutely fit the bill for is just mind-numbing.
The mob movie nostalgia continues with this film because Paramount Pictures has the domestic distribution rights. Paramount Pictures is the studio that produced The Godfather. It’s safe to say that Paramount is confident that this film is a winner given the fact that it has a budget of $100 million.
The Irishman is based off of the book I Heard You Paint Houses, which was co-written by Charles Brandt. The story follows the life of Irish mob hitman, Frank Sheeran, who also helped Brandt write the book. Sheeran was hired to kill over 25 people, including Teamsters union boss Jimmy Hoffa, who was also his best friend.
The term “to paint a house” is a code for killing a man. It references the blood that splashes all over the wall when a person is killed. Robert De Niro is signed on to play the iconic Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran. Pacino and Pesci’s roles are still to be announced.
The film will have a flashback component, according to Yahoo Movies. Seeing younger versions of Pacino, De Niro, and Pesci makes the film even more tempting to watch. The same technology was used in Captain America: Civil War with Robert Downey Jr. Seeing De Niro young and at the top of his game again brings back memories of his role as Vito Corleone.
Each of these respective actor’s history in cinema, let alone mob cinema, makes The Irishman a must see. Martin Scorsese clearly hasn’t lost his touch. His more recent films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo, and The Departed all received high praise. His current project is a film called Silence, and it is set to be released this year. The start of production and potential year of release for The Irishman have yet to be announced.
