Will ‘Star Wars 8’ Feature A Rey And Finn Romance? John Boyega Responds
Star Wars: The Force Awakens not only introduced us to two brand new characters in the beloved sci-fi universe, but it also brought the actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley to mainstream audiences, too. The pair’s on-screen patter and camaraderie immediately kick-started rumors that their characters, Finn and Rey, would start a romance later on in the franchise.
John Boyega has now been asked about the chances of Finn and Rey hooking up at some point, maybe even in Star Wars 8. But the British actor has now dismissed these rumors, insisting that they’re just friends. In fact, Boyega added that since Finn is a Stormtrooper, he’s not even sure if he has a sexual side
After being asked by Variety what was happening between Finn and Rey romantically, Boyega explained, “I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends… Yes, Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance things is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to to go the way you think it’s going to go.”

At the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rey left Finn in order to try and find Luke Skywalker, with the film concluding with a shot of Daisy Ridley’s character offering Skywalker his long lost lightsaber. Reuniting the two characters will be one of the most anticipated moments in Star Wars 8, which is still filming under the direction of Rian Johnson, who has also written the script.
John Boyega’s comments will only add further fuel to the speculation regarding Finn’s relationship with Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron. While there were some Star Wars: The Force Awakens viewers who were convinced that a romance between Finn and Rey was burgeoning, some other fans were adamant that it was Poe Dameron that Finn flirted at a romance with.
This speculation emerged after Finn, who at the time was called FN-2187, saved the life of the Resistance pilot, who then went on to rename FN-2187 as Finn. Throughout the film, especially after Finn learned that Poe Dameron had survived the TIE fighter crash on Jakku, Finn and Poe then shared numerous embraces and exchanges that led moviegoers to speculate that there was more to their friendship.
Previously speaking about the potential romance between Finn and Poe, John Boyega once again dismissed it, insisting that the duo were just friends. However, the English actor admitted that it could easily blossom into a romance in the very near future.

“As far as I’m concerned when JJ [Abrams] sat us down to go through the script, it was a bromance,” John Boyega explained to Radio Times. “But now I’m learning what Mark Hamill said before when he didn’t know that Darth Vader was Luke’s father: you never know what they’re going to pull. I’m looking at the director Rian [Johnson] closely so he can get me involved early, so I can prepare myself. So who knows?”
John Boyega is currently very hard at work on Star Wars 8, with the latest news regarding the blockbuster revealing that Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, as well as Boyega, have now arrived in Ireland to shoot scenes. Aside from this trio of actors, Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran will also star in the blockbuster, which is due to hit cinemas on December 15, 2017.
