‘Castle’ Fans ‘Glad’ About Cancellation Following Stana Katic’s Departure
While the cancellation of a show usually doesn’t come as great news to viewers, that doesn’t seem to be the case for a number of fans of ABC’s crime drama, Castle, and its star, Stana Katic.
After the network announced that Castle would not be returning for a ninth season on May 12, a slew of fans of the drama took to social media to reveal that they were actually glad the alphabet network had opted to pull the plug on the show, just weeks after it was announced that Stana had been fired.
“I never imagined I’d be happy about my favorite show being cancelled, but now I have to say that I am. It was the only way to save it,” @Stana_Katy tweeted regarding Castle’s cancellation. Similar sentiments were echoed by @journo_dale, who wrote on the social media site, “Have to say, I’m glad they’ve decided not to renew #Castle rather than go next season without Stana Katic.”
“Personally I am glad that ABC Cancelled #Castle I was not ready to deal with a season without Stana Katic #castlecancelled,” @ComedyIsTherapy tweeted. @MissAmanda3181 wrote, “To think that I’d be happy about #castle being cancelled is shocking but with the departure of [Stana Katic] it couldn’t have survived.”Deadline officially announced that Stana Katic and co-star Tamala Jones would not be returning for what was thought to be a ninth season of the show last month, where an insider revealed that Katic “was never approached to re-up her contract and was not offered an opportunity to continue on the show.”
At the time, the site speculated that the drama was expected to continue on with Season 9 featuring Stana’s co-star Nathan Fillion, but alleged that both Stana and Tamala had not been asked back for “budgetary reasons.”
The network’s decision to not bring back Katic, who has appeared on the show since it first began in 2009, left a number of fans furious, causing a slew of angry viewers to take to social media to threaten to boycott what was expected at the time to be the upcoming ninth season.
“We should boycott #castle. No more bulls*** for me. IM DONE. CASTLE ENDED ON 8X17 @Castle_ABC @ABCNetwork. U dont respect fan at all,” @andreina_hc tweeted out after it was announced that Stana Katic was not asked to renew her contract.
“Stana’s dismissal is disgusting. Things will get less heavy if they cancel Castle [because] everyone will have the same end,” @perrykatics added. “Beckett deserves better.”
A number of other fans also used the social media platform last month to encourage the network to cancel Castle following the announcement of Stana’s shocking departure.
“Can we boycott #Castle and make ABC cancel it? Just cancel it, please. What’s #Castle without Beckett?” @Bonstle tweeted. And @inherwanderings wrote, “No castle s9. Save Beckett. Cancel castle. Let Beckett live. Take the hint abc. NO MORE CASTLE.”
But, while fans were taking to the 140-character site to express their happiness over Castle‘s pretty surprising cancellation, Stana Katic also took to Twitter to comment on the big news, where Katic admitted that her eight seasons with the drama had been “unforgettable.”“Dear Castle fans, cast and crew: Your devotion to our show has carried us for these unforgettable eight seasons,” Stana told fans in a photo of a hand-written note posted to her official Twitter page on May 12. “I’m lucky to have met and worked with and for the lot of you. I will always be grateful. Big hug, Stana.”
