‘Fear The Walking Dead’: Did Alex Just Become The First Female Antagonist In The ‘Walking Dead’ Universe?
Fans have been anticipating a new character to arrive in Fear The Walking Dead from the miniseries, Flight 462. It was always expected this character would be a friendly one, but could the addition of Alex actually be a curse for the core characters?
SPOILER ALERT: This article discusses Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
Fans spent all last week trying to guess who Travis would bump into in Episode 5 (entitled “Captive”) of Season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead. Now that person has been revealed as Alex (Michelle Ang) from Flight 462, could this be a game changer for the Walking Dead universe?
After all, since Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) went full Shane in Episode 3 of Season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead and cut Alex’s raft lose, she has been though a particularly rough spell. Not only did she nearly die of thirst, but she had to kill Jake (Brendan Meyer), the fellow character from Flight 462, rather than let him drown. She didn’t have anything to prevent him from turning, however, so it is likely he is now a walker who will spend the rest of his time swimming with the fishes. Just when she thought there was no hope, Alicia’s (Alycia Debnam-Carey) radio friend, Jack (Daniel Zovatto) and his group found and rescued her. However, while Alex is thankful for the rescue, she is not a person who will bow down and do as she’s told just because she has been rescued, unlike Jack who feels an obligation to he group he is with because they saved his life, as the actor told The Wrap recently. The end of Episode 5 of Fear The Walking Dead saw Travis (Cliff Curtis) and Alicia escape Jack’s group, leaving Jack, Alex and the heavily pregnant Vida (Veronica Diaz) still on board. Jack had his heart broken by Alicia, and Vida had been locked in a cage (also by Alicia). Alex still bore the massive grudge for the entire crew of the Abigail thanks to Strand cutting her and Jake loose. She blames each and everyone on board the ship for Strand’s actions. That’s a pretty massive gripe to hold. And Alex seems to be a person who is ruthless as well as dedicated to whatever cause she picks thanks to what we have seen of her in both Flight 462 and Fear The Walking Dead.
Flight 462 saw Alex determined to kill anyone who could end up infected, regardless of what others thought. If it wasn’t for her actions on board the plane, it is highly likely the entire crew and passengers would have turned a lot earlier on. Then, when she and Jake escape on board a raft with two others from Flight 462, she, once more, makes ruthless decisions for the sake of his survival because she had also placed Jake within her tiny sphere of people who must be saved. She defended Jake and protected him from those who threatened him beyond all reasonable rationale. It is these two qualities that place her in the perfect position to become the first truly evil female character in the Walking Dead universe. Could subsequent episodes featuring Alex show her forming an even deeper hatred of the crew aboard the Abigail? Could she also convince Jack that they are just as bad as she thinks they are even though Jack looked like he could have followed Alicia if she had let him at the end of Episode 5 of Fear The Walking Dead? As Michelle Ang told Digital Spy recently, Alex is apt to hold grudges.
“I don’t think [s]he’s going to forget what Strand did – we’ve seen her act fiercely towards people who aren’t in alignment with her, or who aren’t willing to protect what she wants to protect. But she is also a survivor and Strand has a lot of resources, so it’ll be interesting to see whether diplomacy is in order to get to those resources.”
It seems only time will tell just how much of a threat Alex will turn out to be in AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. And whether she will continue on in her vendetta against the crew of the Abigail now she has her own ship at her disposal.
Season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead returns next Sunday, May 15, with Episode 6, titled “Sicut Cervus,” at 9 p.m. ET. The official synopsis for Episode 6 is as follows.
“Conflict arises as the Abigail approaches its destination; Chris makes a staggering decision.”
